How to meet women in todays times?

2020.09.16 03:10 ElectricOne55 How to meet women in todays times?

I live in Augusta, Ga where most of the girls are married and it's very conservative, and not that many ways to meet people. The dating apps are empty, but in person it looks like everyone is already with someone, and there is nothing to do in my area. I get more messages on pof than tinder, tinder I maybe get 2 matches a month. I'm not overweight, I'm not a photographer or anything and don't go too extra with my pics, but I'm not bad looks wise because I get more messages and have a higher success rate on pof.
The only thing is pof implemented the message limit where you have to wait 24 hrs to message more than 50 people. I think it might be because I have a really low ELO score but idk. I live in a small town too, and see more hot women on tinder compared to pof, pof they are more realistic (like slightly overweight, they work regular low paying jobs, and most of the women are 28 to 36). Whereas Tinder has a lot of women that look like 9s and 10s and I'm like I never see that many beautiful women in my small town of 200000 people, so I wonder if their just bot profiles, and no women even use Tinder. Idk what to do to meet women anymore.
Would paying for tinder raise my score to get me more matches? Should I move to a different town? Are there certain activities I'm missing out on? I could go to a bar, but wouldn't it look weird if I just went by myself?

2020.09.10 21:26 Philosopher_1 Ship manifest from bremen

I’m looking for a John Henry kruels immigration to America. first I’d like to clarify he left America for Germany in the 1920s but this was just to visit family, I’m looking for when he said he came to America may 16, 1883 according to his passport application. He was born in 1866 He may of already been married because his wife also came from the same city in Germany, her name was Marie georiganna Augusta Dorothea prinzhorn. The passport applications lists the “verra” as the ship they came back on but I can’t find record of that ship. Someone found a ship named “Il vero” that matches the date may 16 1883 but the film only records a single passenger.
Edit: I’m changing my request, if anyone could identify the name written below Josef kruel that would be more helpful.

2020.09.04 18:41 blumplstiltskin Questions about moving/ finding a new job

Well, it’s weird posting to strangers when so few of my friends and family know, but everything’s going so fast, it’s impossible to keep up. But, here it goes.
I’m a 33M who agreed with 30F STBX to get a divorce. Our 2nd anniversary is in a few weeks, and luckily we have no kids nor houses to split. The properties are in her name, and we just want to get this over with.
I’ll try to keep the backstory short. We met on Tinder a couple weeks after I came home from Afghanistan, where an old fiancée broke off the broke off the engagement three days before I deployed. Looking back, it was 2-3 months into us dating before I seemed fully over my ex fiancée. But we had fun and after 10 months dating a couple of hours away, I moved to Augusta, GA for six months, before getting reassigned to Savannah, GA. By then, we had agreed to find assignments closer to NY where she lives. Having luck finding assignments, I got out and moved to upstate NY. After three months of me moving, we got engaged and married a years after that. In my three years living here, I’ve had three serous jobs. First one I left after 10 months because my hours didn’t allow us to see each other. Second one was overnight and I was fired after 8 months. Then after a year of temp jobs I have an every level sales gig. Far cry from an Army CPT, but a stepping stone.
Now that I have stability, and she does too, she realized the long distance and rapid changes meant it wasn’t until now we realized we’re not compatible and aren’t a match in terms of supporting each other properly. She had been unhappy for about six months and after two months of talks and addressing issues, we both realized there’s fundamental personality conflicts that we feel therapy and effort will serve as band aids. I’d also add that I haven’t made any real friends since moving three years ago, and I’m not close with her family though we get along.
The talk where we agreed to divorce happened on Monday night/Tuesday morning. I’m supposed to be getting served papers today, and I’ve started looking into starting over in Virginia where my best friend lives and it’ll be easy to land job in the government (federal, commonwealth, or local doesn’t matter).
We’ve talked about a timeline for me to move out and while I don’t want to drag my feet, I’ve rushed moves before, rushed the job hunt before and now I don’t want to rush the move AND job hunt at the same time. She wasn’t ok with me moving in November but I’m applying for a VA job where the opening closes in late September. She said to go back to temping or work at a bs retail job at Home Depot or something. My resume is already littered with two years of temping and underemployment, so as a compromise I asked if a month is ok to pack everything, arrange for a storage unit/U-Haul, line up another entry-level sales job, and out in my two week notice at work. No response yet, but I’m checking with y’all to see if one month is good timeline to move and have an acceptable job lined up

2020.08.09 18:23 abasagoitia Functional PC

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, a large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

2020.08.02 20:05 najumobi Some Americans Wait, Without Pay, for Covid-19 Test Results

The Wall Street Journal
Article: "Some Americans Wait, Without Pay, for Covid-19 Test Results"
Date: August 2, 2020
https://www.wsj.com/articles/some-americans-wait-without-pay-for-covid-19-test-results-11596360602
For people who can't work from home, long waits for coronavirus tests can mean weeks with no income.
Taylor Hernandez got a coronavirus test immediately after a new employee at the convenience-store chain where she works came in sick.
The Augusta, Ga.,-area team trainer expected results in two to seven days. Instead, she has been waiting for 16. And she hasn’t gotten paid. Her employer said its policy is to pay for only up to 80 hours of wait time, but she said her manager told her she must first return to work with a negative result in hand.
The convenience chain didn’t respond to a request for comment about Ms. Hernandez’s situation.
“Money was already getting tight and now I’ve been out for two weeks and a day,” said Ms. Hernandez, who is 10-weeks pregnant. Her husband’s income alone isn’t enough to keep up with their bills and after three weeks without pay, they have fallen behind.
As Covid-19 cases resurge across the country, the demand for testing has soared once again, creating backlogs as long as several weeks. For many people, particularly essential workers who can’t do their jobs from home, longer waits can mean time without pay while they wait to be allowed back to work. Others have been forced to use vacation time.
The rules for unemployment benefits vary by state, but in many cases, individuals who haven’t been laid off and aren’t positive for Covid-19 aren’t eligible. Georgia’s guidelines say that before an individual can apply for pandemic unemployment assistance, he or she must apply for and be denied traditional unemployment assistance. A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Labor said state unemployment insurance wouldn’t cover scenarios like Ms. Hernandez’s, but pandemic unemployment assistance might.
Ms. Hernandez said she didn’t apply because she kept thinking her test results would come back imminently and didn’t understand how the benefits worked in her case.
Waiting without pay for Covid-19 test results can be financially devastating. Nearly half of American families don’t have savings equivalent to 2½ weeks of take-home pay, said Fiona Greig, director of consumer research for the JPMorgan Chase Institute.
Past research on family savings focused on month-to-month dips in income, but she said situations like Ms. Hernandez’s “could be even more dramatic since it’s losing all pay.”
Ashlyn Reynolds wasn’t paid for two weeks in July while awaiting Covid-19 results. The incoming college senior spends the summers saving for school by working at a restaurant near Richmond, Va.
She scheduled a test after starting to feel sick earlier in July, thinking the turnaround time would be five to seven days. The wait stretched to 17 days before Ms. Reynolds received a negative result. A manager said the family-run business doesn’t pay staff who are out awaiting a test result.
“It depleted my savings that I use when I’m in school,” Ms. Reynolds said of the delay.
Although she has picked up extra shifts since returning, she needed to dip into money she had put away to pay her rent.
“I’m working 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. just to catch up with finances,” she said.
March’s $2.2 trillion coronavirus stimulus bill included expanded unemployment insurance eligibility for self-employed workers, freelancers and independent contractors. The Families First Coronavirus Response Act, passed in March, also offers tax credits to companies with fewer than 500 employees who pay workers’ wages while out briefly for Covid-related reasons.
But the expanded unemployment insurance eligibility, which expired at the end of July, doesn’t account for workers who make most of their money on commission.
“If I’m not working, I’m not earning,” said Denise Jennings, an independent notary loan-signing agent in Virginia who developed Covid-like symptoms July 10.
When she got tested, Ms. Jennings, 49 years old, budgeted for a five-day turnaround for results. She didn’t plan for the 16 business days it has stretched to. Now, she’s still in limbo, quarantining and out of work while she waits to find out if she can assure clients she’s Covid-free.
“Had I not had a little cushion, it means the loss of my ability to pay rent,” she said.

2020.07.30 08:43 sassyandsmartassey How do I find out where my Ubox is being delivered?

Hi everyone,
I am having trouble finding out how/when/and where my ubox is being delivered. I rented the box June 26th and it shipped July 7th after calling customer service multiple times because the wrong dates were entered to ship. I made my reservation in the store and the CSR completed the contract for me. She had my box being delivered to Augusta, GA but could not tell me the store it would be going to.
Also, I am concerned because I received a call last week asking me if I dropped my box back off at the original location in Alaska. Eventually, I was called back and told my box was on the truck but never got scanned so part of me thinks my box is heading to wrong place. My guaranteed date of delivery is August 22nd but the GM told me that it almost never takes a month a half to ship. I have my dad coming to help me move in to my new place and would hate to waste his time. I have attempted to call and live chat and haven’t received any answers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

2020.07.29 13:16 mjallen1308 Damned if I do, Damned if I don’t. EVEN W/ A LAWYER.

All I ever wanted was to come home and work things out with my husband. He is an E6 92Y in the Army. We got into an argument after he accused me of infidelity and told me to “Get my shit and get the fuck out..”
Now, I didn’t want to stress him out since I was in the process of promoting. I came to PA from Augusta where we are stationed (I had quit my state job in WA to PCS to GA with him after he got upset with me for choosing to stay behind in WA to work instead of going to Korea with him bc he had been complaining about me not working) so he could clear his mind before AIT and so I could attend a retirement party for my uncle.
My spouse went to AIT for 45 days in Virginia shortly after I got on the road. He then filed for divorce and refused to let me come home. I kept saying let’s work this out, but he would just tell me to sign the papers. He’d tell me he missed me then tell me to sign the papers. He’d tell me to come home then change his mind the next day.
He called asked me to help him do Correspondence courses to help him promote and I did then he promoted, and I came home for the promotion ceremony. He then started asking me to sign the papers again. He also had some guy spend the weekend at our house while refusing to let me come home and using the BAH to buy a new car. Ultimately I just wanted to work things out and come home and I didn’t want to fight bc I knew he was just grow my resentful towards me thinking I wanted money. And tbh there was nothing I could get in the divorce that I wanted - which was only him.
He ended up putting a clause in the divorce papers that allows me to move back into out martial home until he PCSes next year. I like our home and I moved away from PA a long time ago after my family started accusing me of sleeping with my cousin and fathering her child but also accusing me of sleeping with any male roommate I lived with as if 2 BR apartments are non existent. So I NEVER wanted to live there and around my family again. I love them but I need to be far away from them. So when I signed the papers, I knew it said I could move back in and I wanted to because: [ 1 ] Some of my personal stuff is still at the house in GA. [ 2 ] I didn’t want to stay in PA around my very toxic family. They’re African American and VERY religious. I’m an atheist and no matter how many times I tell them this they still throw they’re bible BS at me as if it means anything to me. They don’t even recognize my marriage and refused to allow us to sleep in the same room. (b) One of my aunts told me to divorce my husband so I could “start living right” and another told me that “god doesn’t like ‘that’ lifestyle”. They all referred to my husband as “my friend” and got angry at me bc I didn’t tell them I was marrying him as if I’m required to do so. (c)They also said they “always knew I was gay bc I never brought any girls around and only hung around guys and they were just waiting for me to come out of the closet.” I consider myself Bi/Pansexual but I don’t have a preference one way or the other. I literally just want to be with someone who I’m compatible with. My husband was the first guy I’ve ever dated, been intimate with and married. I’m very picky with guys. I was dating this girl on and off for almost 8 years while I lived in PA and I finally broke down and bought her to an event my family were asking her inappropriate questions about whether I or my cousin was the father of her baby. She was embarrassed as hell and I began separating my personal life from them and vstopped bringing my friends around them. Even with my separation, they never encouraged me to work things out and always brought up “diseases” and pointed out EVERY male on his page insinuating that he was sleeping with them simply bc we’re two men. I’ve never had an STD in my life. [ 3 ] My mom is moving in with her bf and giving up her apt where I’m staying and my husband knew it would be more incentive for me to sign the papers if it said I could move back home. [ 4 ] I’m joining the Air Force and I was actually going to surprise him, since I know he wants to get out of the military. He’s never been happy. Even though he’s promoting fairly fast and fairly easily, he’s having trouble getting his GT score above the requirement for the job he wants to switch to. I wanted tell him that if we could work things out and reconcile, he could get out and I would take care of everything as far as bills and what not. It wasn’t for him to be stagnate or to be dependent on me but I wanted him to take some time and re-evaluate what he wanted to do.
When I finally told him I would sign the papers he said “we can be friends” but as soon as I signed the papers, and brought up moving back home, he blocked me and is now trying to prevent me from moving back to our home. Saying he’ll move out/move on post. The lease is up in Dec but the paperwork says that he’ll maintain “ownership of the rental/marital property” and “be responsible for all expenses” but that I “shall be allowed to remain in the marital property until he PCSes” which is next Dec. Last Dec when I tried coming home he said he was downsizing but ultimately renewed the lease when I stopped pushing as much about coming home.
He’s telling our friends and some of my family members that we can be friends but has blocked me from all points of contact and threatened to call the police if I show up at the house (neither one of us has threatened one another nor have we been physically violent toward each other. I’m just not a violent person anyway.) Like dude YOU put that in the paperwork and you backed me into a corner to sign it and now you don’t want to follow the agreement.
He got upset at me bc when I found out he had some guy stay over (which he lied about at first). He said no one stayed over, then said it was a friend, then said they slept in separate beds. I have security footage that shows them going upstairs for 2 hours in the middle of the day and coming back down with different clothes on. I also show on my GPS history they went to a sex shop. He doesn’t know I have the footage of them. But I feel like it would hurt me more to ruin his career bc I know how it feels. I just don’t like hurting ppl even if they may deserve it.
After that I filed to get my portion of the BAH even though I was just going to move back home so he could have it back bc I really didn’t want the money but you don’t fuck around with other ppl and bar me from our home that’s being paid for by money you get for being married to me (even tho I don’t claim nor do I really want it. I just want to be home.)
He also got mad at me for calling IG on him bc he went and bought a $35K sports car with the BAH money. But we talked and I told him straight up I didn’t want the money, just wanted to come home. I Packed my shit up, told him I would call the next day so we could work out the details. Then I call him, and this conversation ensues:
[ ME ]: “I made a decision. I’m ready to come home.”
[ HIM ]: “I changed my mind. They set the allotment up.”
[ ME ]: “Ummm cancel it! Once I’m home, it stops. You literally wouldn’t have to send me any money and the allotment doesn’t even take effect for 2 months anyway. I don’t want the money.”
[ HIM ]: “Doesn’t work like that. I’m paying you the spousal support. Actions have consequences. You called IG on me and said I abandoned you and wasn’t giving you the BAH, which I wasn’t and I acknowledge that. But now I have to find roommates bc I won’t be able to make my car payment ($800/mo total for note and insurance) and I’ll only have $150/mo left over after bills. You just fucked me over. We can talk about you coming home if you sign the papers but idk about that.”
At this point, it’s Dec 2019 and we had been technically “separated” since April 2019, but emotionally (for him really) since Sept 2019. He told me in May 2019 that as a soldier he was obligated to support me financially until the divorce was final and then sent no money. He lamented having so many bills and the rent and having to start over. I didn’t know how much money he was making but I knew it was a large cut from what we made in WA so I caved in and told him to make sure he was good. Keep in mind, he was living in our 4 bedroom house and I was stuck, looking for a job in my moms apartment with no heat. He then went out and bought a $35K sports car and took a vacation to Barbados and I STILL didn’t ask him bc, while I needed it, I didn’t want it. I quit my state job and then wrecked my car (Fell asleep on our way to the hotel after driving 18 hours) during our PCS and I literally had nothing. He cried about having to “start over from scratch” when all he did was just get up the next day like normal and go to work and how I “left him there by hisself and he was crying” but when I kept asking to come home he’d say no and ask me to sign for the divorce. It’s like he wanted me to come home but when I’d ask he’d say no.
In terms of the money, he knew he was supposed to give me my portion of the BAH and didn’t and I didn’t ask for it while I literally struggled for almost 9 months. During that time he called me several times and asked if I wanted to come home and I said of course. One particular day, he called me late and said he had done some thinking and asked me if I wanted to come home. I actually packed up all my things that night and I told him I had an interview lined up and was going to get back in school AND I was going to give him the money back for the divorce papers. I also was going to surprise him when I got home that let him know I had decided to and already started the process to join the Air Force and that he could get out and never have to work again and I’d take care of him to show him how sorry I was for everything. He then texted me the next day while I was finishing packing and calling the recruiters in GA to talk about setting up my Asvab appt. At the time I didn’t have message preview turned on so I couldn’t actually see what he sent but I knew in my heart it was bad. I was trying to not think it. Then I opened it he said he was being hasty and he’s sorry but “the offer to come home is off the table”. I was so devastated and heart broken. I think I cried for at least 5 hours.
I asked him to go to a few Marriage Counseling sessions with me and at first he said no, then he said he’d think about it, then no again then he said we could do marriage counseling if I signed the papers. I was like that defeats the purpose of marriage counseling. Then he said no again.
A month ago I went to GA to talk to him. He said he wouldn’t talk to me unless I signed the papers and the “continuously showing up unannounced is ‘not cute’” even though it’s the first time I showed up and I told him I was coming. I proposed that I would sign the paper in exchange for allowing me to come home and for 30 days to show him I was serious about getting things together so we could have a conversation. I didn’t expect things to just go back to normal right away and was even ok with the divorce going through but I just wanted to talk about working things out slowly since, despite me working under the table due to COVID, he seems to think I just sit around all day.
I’ve actually been working and exercising/losing weight/going to the gym to trying to get prepared for basic training. I was hoping we could exercise together and rebuild things. He said 30 days was “unrealistic” but I asked for the least amt of time bc I already knew I was joining the Air Force so getting my asvab done was on the top of my list of things to do. I even offered to help out with rent AAAANNND I also offered to pay him back the BAH and the divorce paper money and said if you feel like you haven’t changed your mind, the papers will be signed. If you feel like I’ve done everything I said I was gonna do and you still wanna separate, then the papers will be signed.
I just feel like I was at a loss. A damned if u do/don’t nightmare this entire time. He said “Nobody’s cutting you out. We can be friends but ‘That’s up to you’. We can still hangout and go places together....” The last thing I said to him was I’m going to lose either way bc you know I wouldn’t want to see you with someone else and you’re putting that burden on to me so you can blame it on me but eventually you’ll make up some excuse on my behalf like “I blocked you so it wouldn’t be so hard on you...” to cut me out. Then he threw up into my face about:
[ A ] How I left him in GA alone (and him telling me to get my shit and get the fuck out was just him “saying the usual things when he’s mad”) [ B ] How I called IG on him and tried to ruin his career (despite me doing correspondence courses to help him get promoted while he was keeping me from our home and sleeping with someone else in our home) [ C ] How I left him with all the bills and no money left over so he had to get roommates (Even though I kept telling him I don’t want the money and I just wanted to come home and he could have stopped the allotment but did all that to hurt me even more) [ D ] How he’s over it and is “done crying” and I’m only crying because I want pity (even tho he said all that stuff bc he knows I’d get emotional not bc I want pity but bc I love him. When you love someone and they feel that you’ve hurt them, it makes you feel bad. And I’ve always been emotional when it comes to that bc I just hate feeling like I’ve hurt someone. But also I’m emotional bc im asking him to give me a chance to make it up to him bc I’m going in the Air Force and I want him to get out, etc but I was waiting for the right time to tell him bc damned if I do/don’t).
I literally feel like I’m in a nightmare and it’s even worse bc everything is closed in PA and no one is really hiring and when I am at home, I’m literally by myself bc of the stay inside/social distancing stuff and I’m not really in a good place with my family right now. Then it’s like how do you block me but we’re friends. He couldn’t even text me to tell me I had a message from Enterprise about my rental car, he texted my cousin to tell me about it. If I expose the cheating to get a promotion, the infidelity, etc - I lose him. If don’t - I lose him. This is just not fair. I made a lot of mistakes but to treat me like this is just cruel.

2020.06.05 20:25 GregHullender Trying to connect Andrew Cooper (1750-1805) to Thomas C Cooper (1705-1785)

I'm pretty new to genealogy, so please forgive me if this is too elementary, but I've spent dozens of hours on this, and I'm ready to ask for help.
I'm trying to connect Andrew Cooper (supposedly 1750-1805) with Thomas Cannady Cooper (20 Aug 1705-2 Aug 1785). They're my 5th and 6th great grandparents, respectively. Or at least so I believe at the moment.
Thomas and his ancestry seem to be well attested in "Thomas Cooper of Boston and his descendants"; by Frederick Tuckerman (1890). There's also a lot of well-sourced data about him on FamilySearch.org. He seems to have been born in Boston and settled in Charleston, SC.
Andrew seems to be well established as the father of Joel (1793-1865) and Thomas Cooper (1784-1868) in the "History of Walker County, GA," by James Alfred Sartain (1932), and info about his descendents is plentiful, but there's very little information about Andrew himself. Something that might be a big clue is that it says Andrew represented his district in Augusta Georgia in the Georgia General Assembly for many years. I haven't been able to find a list of people who served in the General Assembly that goes back before about 1920 though. It's a fair guess he was born in Charleston, SC and settled in Augusta, GA.
The big difficulty is connecting the two. FamilySearch shows the connection, but it has zero sources for Andrew. Ancestry.com seems to want to connect Andrew with a Benjamin Cooper from the Pennsylvania Coopers, even though the birth date makes that highly unlikely. Various other sources seem confident Andrew's father was named "Thomas," not Benjamin.
Anyway, I'd love to hear more suggestions for ways to find concrete data on Andrew and his father--whoever that actually turns out to be.

2020.05.07 21:16 dempseyblock24 Speeding Ticket Not Showing up in System

I received a speeding ticket on March 19th, 2020 with my court date being May 11th 2020. I was caught on radar going 92 in a 65 in Augusta, GA or Richmond County. The sheriff who pulled me over told me I could pay it online too.
I went to the website listed on the ticket to pay it, but the site says "no citations were found matching your input". I called the number on the website and gave them my citation number, but they said there was no citation in their system matching my citation number or DL number.
What does this mean and what should I do?

2020.04.12 08:54 rhonnie14 They’re Gonna Send You To Milledgeville

We hadn’t talked in a long time. Not since high school in Stanwyck, Georgia. But that was the beauty of the internet, right? To reconnect.
Reddit led me back to u/Traque90 and u/Anuacyl. Then Facebook solidified our friendship. To my relief, we still had the shared love for writing and horror. For exploring haunted locations. The chemistry was still there. We met in Atlanta a few times after that. And for the first time in over ten years, we went on a road trip.
Now here we were. All three of us crammed inside my silver Camry. Anuacyl right beside me, Traque in the backseat. We had our sights set on exploring the Tate House in Milledgeville, Georgia. A haunted house dating back to the nineteenth century. We also planned on visiting other nearby paranormal hotspots like Samford Hall and the Old Governor’s Mansion.
Beneath the smooth April sunlight, our journey was joyous. Aside from stopping at the occasional convenience store for booze and bathrooms, we partied hard along the way. The Killers and other 2000s rock a constant on the radio. With cups of beer and wine, there was no rush for Milledgeville… especially when we had each other’s company.
On my fourth beer, I looked over at Anuacyl. Her pale complexion and sly dimples. Her free spirit well on display with the long brown hair and Doctor Who tee. On the other hand, Traque was more reserved. Behind the big glasses, his bright eyes studied us with a writer’s gaze. Not that we were complaining… I have to admit, if I was single I’d have been quite smitten with these two.
Anuacyl faced my slender frame. My angular face. “Are you sure they’ll let us explore?” she asked.
I nodded. “Yeah, the Tate House at least.” I flashed her a goofy smile. “Milledgeville likes their ghost tours.”
“I bet,” she replied with a laugh.
“Sounds like every small town,” Traque commented.
We turned to face his smirk. Traque’s dry humor always on point. He held up his cup of wine.
“I wouldn’t wanna find ghosts with anyone else!” Traque added.
“Same,” Anuacyl replied. “Have you seen any before, Rhonnie?”
“I haven’t but know people who have…” I said. I looked between the two. Enjoying their pretty spotlight. “Especially at night.”
Excited, Anuacyl grabbed my arm. “Can we sneak in tonight then?”
“Of course, we can,” Traque said with confident snarkiness.
I nodded. “He’s right. No one gives a damn.”
“It’s that easy, huh?” Anuacyl quipped.
The Milledgeville city limits sign greeted us.
I brushed my emo swoop to the side. “Yo, we made it!”
Leaning in closer, Traque revealed a pearly smile. “Where we going to first?”
I stared on at the highway. After the rear projection of endless forest, I was glad to finally see houses. Small stores and restaurants. “I don’t know. I was thinking we could get a flavor of the Tate House before sneaking in tonight.”
“I like the sound of that,” Traque replied.
We both looked over at Anuacyl. Our peer pressure so charming.
“Sure, let’s go!” she said.
But Milledgeville was different. Different than how I remembered. The stores looked unfamiliar. Abandoned if not for the fact customers were still at the full service gas station. At SweeTreats, a random ice cream shop. But the buildings were so old and desolate. Too hideous to be kitschy.
“Where’s the house?” Anuacyl asked.
Then I saw it on the horizon. Like a haunted castle on the hill: Milledgeville’s Central State Hospital. The brick buildings all spread out on the sprawling property. The hospital’s driveway so long and spiraling... leading all the way up to an even longer stone staircase. To the towering pillars. The entrance to what appeared to be the world’s largest mausoleum.
All three of us looked on at the eerie sight. Totally fucking creeped out.
I was more frightened than the others. Because I knew. I knew Central State was supposed to be further down the road. In the darkness on the edge of town. Not this soon… Where were the familiar parts of Milledgeville? The parts I always passed before reaching the asylum.
“Yo, what the fuck’s that!” Traque said, unusual excitement in his voice.
Battling the rising fear, I turned my gaze back toward the road. In desperate search of anything recognizable. Anything that could explain the disappearance of both the town and my memories. “It’s the old state hospital,” I said. I flashed a smile at my fascinated friends. “My dad told me back when he was a kid, they’d always say don’t do anything crazy or we’ll ship you to Milledgeville!”
“Oh shit!” Traque said.
Anuacyl turned and watched the hospital vanish in the background. “Wait, is it supposed to be haunted?
Keeping a firm grip on the wheel, I didn’t slow down. Too eager to leave this fucking place behind. “They say it is.”
Traque leaned in toward us. “It looks fucking haunted. We should go in.”
“Oh, I was gonna surprise y’all.”
A blue sign cheered me up. Its Crayola-style letters a beacon of hope amidst the anxiety: Downtown Milledgeville! Straight Ahead!
Now relaxed, I slowed down a bit. Of course, I knew the downtown. Milledgeville had a cute square, cute gazebo. An All-America Utopia. And we were so close.
“I just wanted to show y’all the Tate House and Old Governor’s Mansion first,” I continued. “They got some people patrolling the hospital, but it won’t be as guarded at night.”
“Gotcha,” Traque replied. “Both that and Tate at night. I’m down.”
“Save the best for last,” I said with a forced smile. I looked over at Anuacyl’s eager eyes. “I think Flannery O’Connor was inspired by the hospital.”
Traque cracked up. “I can only imagine. It looked scary as fuck.”
“It really is...”
Curious, Anuacyl turned her focus toward the highway. Toward the forest. The stray warehouses. Toward downtown’s arrival. “So is the Tate House downtown?”
“Yeah.” I leaned in closer. “It should be coming up…”
Then horror crashed my brief buzz. There was that oldass full service gas station again. SweeTreats. All those bizarre businesses. Buildings that were tombstones in this Georgia graveyard… No different than the same customers that were still there.
I shivered in the sunlight. “What the fuck…”
“Didn’t we just drive through here?” I heard Traque say.
“Yeah.... I don’t understand.” Struggling to keep my composure, I turned down The Killers. Tried to focus rather than panic. “I must’ve missed the turn.”
Next to me, Anuacyl entered an enthralled silence. She stared on ahead. A smile creeping across her face…
“Maybe it loops around or something,” Traque commented. Getting drunker and drunker, he slouched in the backseat. “All these weirdass Georgia roads…”
Now I saw what Anuacyl was admiring.
There on the left lurked Central State Hospital. They’d sent us off to Milledgeville, alright… And with my nerves hitting a wild fever pitch, I probably belonged there at this point.
“Shit…” I muttered. I wanted to zoom on by… but deep down, I knew there was no escape. Not now. I felt anxiety further grip my soul. Felt it make my foot ease up on the gas pedal… The Camry now slowed to a lethargic speed. An unseen force coercing me to Milledgeville’s most notorious resident.
Traque leaned in behind me. Both our restless gazes stayed on the old asylum. No cars were present. No security. No sign of life.
“You think we should go?” he asked.
I faced the highway’s battered pavement. “Naw, we should just go to the Tate House-”
With sudden ferocity, Anuacyl snatched my arm.
“No, please!” she said.
I turned and looked into her pleading eyes.
“It’s a sign, Rhonnie,” she said.
Grinning, Traque set his sights on the hospital. We were now closer to it. Closer to its many entrances. “She’s right.”
I felt Anuacyl’s grip tighten. A chain binding me to Central State.
“Let’s check it out,” Anuacyl said.
“Yeah, I don’t see anybody!” Traque said.
“Come on, Rhonnie,” Anuacyl exclaimed. She leaned in closer.
We were now only a few feet away from the drive leading to the hospital’s pecan orchard. The easiest way to sneak in... A spot I hadn’t explored in over a decade.
“Tell us the story,” Anuacyl said.
Like a tour guide, I gave in to the audience. I drove us down that side road. On to the asylum’s haunted hallowed ground.
Along the way, I broke down Central State’s lore. The SparkNotes version, sure. But that was scary enough... Enough to creep me out for the hundredth time.
Built in 1842, the hospital never changed. Just grew over time in size and legend. Central State had issues. Nothing nefarious. The torture wasn’t purposeful. There were just too many Goddamn patients. If reports were true, the staff-to-patient ratio swelled up to around one to one hundred.
With no resources and room, the hospital had no choice but to cut corners. Crazed children were kept in cages, strait-jackets became part of the patients’ unofficial uniforms. Various “techniques” were used not so much to help as subdue… Cheaper, practical, sadistic methods ranging from shock therapy to lobotomies. Before the hospital finally shut down, studies revealed licensed psychiatrists were no longer on site. There was no rehabilitation attempted, much less possible. Central State Hospital was a tomb for the troubled. Both within its brick walls and within its twenty-five thousand unmarked graves.
In the pecan orchard, I parked behind a cluster of trees. Regardless of the high grass and dying tree limbs, the orchard was a sanctuary compared to the rest of this dead zone.
I hesitated. Scanned the property. A back building stood right before us. One of its doors wide open. But not even the bright sun could resurrect the frightening sight. The centuries of torture and victims trapped inside.
“I don’t see anybody at least,” Anuacyl commented.
“You know, I just realized something,” I heard Traque say. He laid a hand on my shoulder. His grin grabbing Anuacyl and I’s attention. “This is like the center, you know. The center of everything.”
Anuacyl chuckled. “What do you mean?”
Unable to control his enthusiasm, Traque motioned toward the building. “This hospital’s located between all of us... Like in the middle of our triangle.”
“It is called Central State…” I quipped.
Traque grabbed Anuacyl’s arm. “You’re in Augusta, right?”
“Yeah…” Anuacyl replied.
Trauqe turned his excited eyes toward me. “And you’re in Columbus still right, Rhonnie?”
Thanks to Traque, I was feeling more and more uneasy. “Well, yeah...”
With a wild cackle, Traque pointed at himself. “And I’m in Atlanta! Just think about it, man! Where we all live now.” He pointed at the hospital’s brick corpse. “This hospital’s in the middle of our fucking triangle!”
Anuacyl smirked. “So what? You’re saying this is like destiny or something?”
“Hell, maybe! I don’t know!”
Amidst their laughter, I looked on at Central State. The open door. The many cracked windows. We were now in the middle of these one thousand acres. Far from the main highway. All alone in this country asylum... And about to check in.
Everyone grabbed their booze and stepped out into the sunshine. Anuacyl and Traque had me play lookout. Not that I was complaining. I lingered behind in the orchard. Watched my two friends make their way to the ominous entrance. From here, I could tell Central State was a dark dungeon. Even beyond the grave.
“Y’all sure you don’t want me to come with you?” I hollered.
“No!” replied Anuacyl.
Holding his cell phone, Traque faced me. “You’ve already been.” He waved around the property. “Just lookout for cops! Call us if you see anyone!”
Smiling, I flashed them a thumbs up. “Will do!”
I stood there in the perfect weather. Took another sip. The beer did little for my nerves... not at this point. Once Anuacyl and Traque disappeared inside, there was silence all around me. No breeze, no sounds. Just a deathly silence reserved for graveyards. Of course, I wasn’t too far from one. This unofficial cemetery anyway.
In the orchard, I looked on at the scene. The rows and rows of trees on life support. None of them able to produce prosperous pecans.
I paced through the tall grass. Saw the surrounding wilderness. The forest a barricade between the hospital and safety. I then stopped and confronted Central State. That door was still open. Still a gateway to a disturbing past. I started to reach for my phone...
Until I saw him.
A short, skinny man emerged from the darkness. Right from the hospital. A white lab coat was draped across his nice clothes. A surgical mask disguised his face.
Sunlight shined off the man’s bald head. His huge goggles. And off the ice pick he held in one hand. The slender hammer in the other. Perfect tools for a good old-fashioned lobotomy.
I stared on in horror. Certain the man had a wicked smile behind that mask.
As the doctor got closer, I raised my iPhone. Ready to call my friends.
A sharp shot of pain made me cry out. The next one made me stagger back.
Those headaches got worse... Quick bursts in my mind. Each of them so sharp and scathing. This was a fucking braingraine.
Memories sliced into me. Me as a teen back in Stanwyck. Anuacyl and Traque watching Scream with me in Anuacyl’s living room. The boxed wine a flourish for our friendship.
Through the haze, I saw the doctor now enter the orchard. He raised the ice pick. His precise glare focused on me. His steps methodical and efficient.
More pain hit me. Grabbing my temple, I fell back against a tree. Too tormented to scream. Now I saw my left hand shaking beyond belief. Beyond my control. This Southpaw a slave to chilling sensations. To these shocks.
Call it a premonition… or even a flashback. But an image played before me like a frightening horror movie. I saw myself in a dark hospital room. A room without a window. No lighting. And surrounded by screams… How I ended up there, I don’t know. Much less how I recognized the Central State Hospital’s operating room. I was strapped to a table, paralyzed and still except for a left hand that kept shivering in fear. Helpless to a mad doctor’s touch… The same one from the orchard.
The ice pick came hurtling at me.
Crying out, I grabbed my eye. Too late to stop the sharp tip… The sadistic “treatment.”
A tight grip grabbed my arm.
“Let’s fucking go!” I heard Traque yell.
Startled, I looked on at him and Anuacyl. The sun was now fading, but I still saw their terror. The dread shared between us. .
“What happened!” I shouted. My mind racing but no longer in pain. My left hand no longer trembling. The mad doctor no longer here. “Where’d he go!”
Still clutching my arm, Traque pulled me toward the Camry. “Let’s go!”
“They’re coming!” Anuacyl said.
Struggling to catch up with their panicking steps, I let them lead the way. “Who?”
Then I glanced back. Just in time to see the doctor emerge from the doorway. His hammer and icepick at the ready.
“Open the doors!” Anuacyl screamed.
I just let Traque keep dragging me away. Too fucking terrified to move on my own.
Beneath the dying sun, I saw the skinny man march toward us. A female doctor right behind him. Several nurses followed them out. All of them holding scalpels and syringes. All of them disguised by surgical masks. Their piercing glares glued to us.

2020.04.12 07:07 rhonnie14 They’re Gonna Send You To Milledgeville
