HADA LABO GOKUJYUN PREMIUM NEW FORMULA INGREDIENT COMPARISON (long)

2020.09.15 16:03 esme9990 HADA LABO GOKUJYUN PREMIUM NEW FORMULA INGREDIENT COMPARISON (long)

Disclaimer: I am not a chemist, dermatologist or scientist of any sort! Simply did this quick comparison for myself upon hearing about the reformulation of one of my long term favourite products, Hada Labo's gokujyun premium lotion, and thought this sub might like to see it to to save you some time. Also I'm on mobile so apologies for any dodgy formatting. And yes, I'm using emojis as a sort of key, don't hate me pls
HUGE credits to the Ratzilla Cosme blog who has both ingredients lists up on their site already (she translates it herself from the Japanese bottles).

So, let's look at the 7 new additions:
DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL
Very commonly used solvent, humectant and binder. Has "great skin moisturising properties" according to Incidecoder. Safety rating of 1-2 (very safe) on Cosdna. This is likely nothing to worry about unless you already know you have a sensitivity, as it is mostly there to keep the formula feeling elegant and seems to be mildly hydrating.
//
HYALURONIC ACID FERMENT FILTRATE
New kind of hyaluronic acid that Hada Labo claims will "help fortify the skins moisture barrier to help skin looking plump and supple". This is the most controversial addition as many people are sensitive to ferments and this product will unfortunately now be unsuitable for them, which is a real shame. However, if you are someone who enjoys ferments, this might sound rather exciting. I couldn't find much info when I searched "fermented hyaluronic acid", but Ratzilla's list seems to suggest that the HA has been fermented with Lactococcus bacteria, which is proposed to "positively influence both the speed and quality of epidermal growth, resulting in better barrier function and overall skin quality" (Incidecoder). I'm not convinced a difference in effect will be extremely noticeable alongside the 6 other kinds of HA but I expect it will work well for plumping and improving the health and appearance of the skin regardless.
//
HYDROLIZED SODIUM HYALURONATE
This is a super, super tiny (low molecular weight) version of hyaluronic acid, which is intended to penetrate even deeper into the skin and moisturise deeper than standard HA. If your skin wasn't bothered by the Hydrolized hyaluronic acid (another smaller molecule form) in the original formula (still in this one too!) then you might well not be bothered by this version too. Source: incidecoder
//
PROPANEDIOL
Commonly used solvent, humectant and emollient. In short, makes formulas more cosmetically elegant and also helps to pull moisture into the skin and keep it there. Considered very safe and a non-irritant. Further reading: byrdie article paula's choice
//
CAPRYLHYDROXAMIC ACID
An anti-fungal amino acid derived from coconut oil that acts as a preservative. Limited data regarding safety, but Honest Beauty claims it is safer and less harsh than other commonly used preservatives (take this with a grain of salt as Honest Beauty has an agenda to push and so will be biased). Sources: truth in ageing honest beauty
//
HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE
Used as a thickener in cosmetics, gives a nice slippy, gel-like feeling. Water soluble, regarded as safe.
//
XANTHAN GUM
Extremely commonly used thickener and stabiliser. Unlikely to be an issue unless you have a specific sensitivity to it.
//
And now, let's look at the changes in the top few ingredients:
• The top ingredients, which I usually regard as the most important, have changed in that normal Glycerin has been removed and replaced with Diglycerin, and it's now the 7th ingredient as opposed to the 3rd. Diglycerin is not much different as both are powerful hydrators, but Diglycerin supposedly "penetrates slower into the skin but gives longer lasting moisture and less sticky, better skin-feel." Source: incidecoder This might be good for people who have tried the original Premium and found it to be too sticky on the skin! However, due to it being moved lower down, the impact might not be too obvious here.
• Pentylene Glycol has been bumped way up the list from 16th to 4th! This is another thickening ingredient that is key to the sensory feeling of the product, and according to incidecoder its also a moisturiser and helps to hydrate and smooth the skin. However, the derm review actually claims it doesn't have any specific skin benefits, but is at least safe and non-irritating. I personally would rather have kept a higher concentration of glycerin or diglycerin in the product as opposed to this as I think they're more intensely moisturising/hydrating to the skin.
• On the other hand, urea has been moved from the 5th ingredient to the 3rd, where glycerin was previously. From incidecoder: "A derivative of Urea, that works as a strong moisturizer and humectant meaning that it helps the skin to cling onto water and thus to make it hydrated and elastic.
According to manufacturer's data, Hydroxyethyl Urea has a similar moisturizing ability to glycerin (measured at 5%), but it feels nicer on the skin as it is non-sticky and non-tacky and gives a lubricous and moist feeling to the skin."
So, perhaps this formulation could actually remain equally as hydrating, if not more so, but less sticky due to the removal of glycerin?
//
TLDR:
So, apart from the ferment all the new additions are commonly used ingredients - nothing toxic, irritating or comodegenic! In theory (best case scenario) it should be even more hydrating due to the extra two forms of hyaluronic acid, and potentially less sticky due to the removal of glycerin and higher concentrations of urea and Diglycerin! Worst case scenario is that the concentrations of HA have been lowered and it won't have the same deeply plumping effect, only time will tell.
This is getting very long and my thumbs are tired so I'm going to end this post here even though I could potentially go on, hopefully this helps some people make an informed decision on whether they'd like to try the new formulation. I personally have already ordered a bottle as I'm not concerned by the addition of ferments and in general it doesn't look bad at all. Fingers crossed it's somehow even better than the original!!

2020.08.02 19:39 biggreekgeek Flatten the Curve. Part 43. Unrestricted Warfare Being Waged by China. Gray Zone Tactics. Fitness-Tracking Apps. Medical + Hotel Data Hacks. COG Plans Activated. Military at Cheyenne Mountain. Increased Military Suicides. It's All Hidden in Plain Sight.

Airforce Crashes 40% increase. Previous Post here.
The New Normal is hidden in plain sight. Is the New Normal hidden in plain sight? Why the New Normal (probably) isn't hidden in plain sight.
If you've been reading Flatten the Curve from the start, you realize there has been a covert information war being waged against us for a very long time. This covert information war could be hostile, or it could just be an effort to prevent us from panicking. Who knows. Me? I'm erring on the side of caution.
But the information is out there, even if the truth isn't. If you can find the facts then you can connect the dots. The information can't be completely controlled yet, or isn't completely controlled yet, it's hard to tell the difference atm. But there will come a time when the information is under complete and utter lockdown, and that time is fast approaching. This will be dealt with in a later post, and what I've found isn't something that you can afford to miss.
So let's keep Calm and Exercise on.
“The (Defense Intelligence Agency) assesses that a pandemic...will give rise to political, social, and economic instabilities that could, in turn, lead to opportunistic aggression, increased terrorist activity, and dramatic social change, especially when combined with morbidity and mortality.” Examples could include aggression by North Korea against the U.S., Russian moves against Ukraine, a new terrorism campaign by ISIS or Al Qaeda, or other events. Under normal circumstances Branch Plan 3650 would seem like a dry contingency planning document outlining an event that seems unlikely at best. Today, as the U.S. grapples with the unfolding tragedy of the COVID-19 pandemic it seems incredibly prescient.
The Pentagon report stressed that there could be opportunities for aggression during a pandemic. I don’t really have to link proof that we're in a pandemic, do I? And I shouldn't have to remind you that the US Army sent critical teams into lockdown at Cheyenne Mountain. Or that COG (Continuity of Government) secret plans were initiated. These are events that may actually affect your lives, surely you've been following in order to assess your situation, haven't you?
Cyberattack. Biowarfare. Economic instabilities. These are all New Normal procedures of the current Gray War that we're fighting.
It doesn't matter how benign the information seems, if it's a link to one of the HyperwaUnrestricted Warfare/Gray Zone tactics or technology, dig deeper into the rabbit hole. The White Rabbit is easy to find. He's harder to follow. They count on us giving up the chase and going back to being handed carrots from them because it's easier. Following the Rabbit to the hole and digging is harder, and it gets dirty, but by the time you finish you're thinking will be a lot clearer.
January 29, 2018 - Strava suggests military users 'opt out' of heatmap as row deepens. Fitness-tracking company suggests secret army base locations were made public by users, while militaries around world weigh up ban.
March, 2018 - MyFitnessPal hack: What data breach means for other fitness apps.
How many of us forgot about this? I did. Even worse? Initially I dismissed the information. I'm not in the military. We're not in a war. Who cares, right? Let's jump back into the information age stream and float down the lazy river. There's no chance that the lazy river that goes around our theme park turns into a wave pool, right?
February 20, 2020 - Number of patient records breached nearly triples in 2019 - Fierce Healthcare. Over 41 million patient records were breached in 2019, with a single hacking incident affecting close to 21 million records.
Those are a lot of stolen records, aren't they? More records stolen than Micheal Jackson sold with Thriller.
Is that a problem? Maybe. It's more of a problem when you place the hacks into context. In the information age data is the nuclear weapon.
January, 2020 - The 2018 Starwood Hotels breach is only the latest in a long line of high profile intrusions that hotels have faced. It’s notable primarily for how many customer records were exposed — 500 million worldwide according to parent company Marriott — and that the breach wasn’t discovered for four years. This makes the breach a particularly extreme outlier according to Ponemon Institute research data. A recent Ponemon report found that it takes an average of 197 days to discover a breach, and an average of 69 days to close it.
Travel patterns. Medical records. Military lockdown into Cheyenne Mountain. COG plans activated.
Mar 18, 2020 - Newsweek Exclusive: Inside The Military's Top Secret Plans If Coronavirus Cripples the Government.
That sounds very preemptive, doesn’t it? Just like the Pentagon warning about opportunities for aggression during a pandemic.
No need to worry though, right? It's not like an adversary or a governmental entity could use travel patterns and medical data to maximize viral distribution for great effect, right? Or they couldn't use that data in order to target key service members of the armed forces to handicap a retaliation or our Armed Forces ability to defend us during an opportunistic event to stage military action.
Nah.
WASHINGTON — Air Force Col. Thomas Falzarano, who commanded the service’s 21st Space Wing, was found dead Tuesday at his home on Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, service officials said Wednesday. The Air Force has opened an investigation into Falzarano’s death but initial indications show he likely died of natural causes, officials said in a statement. Falzarano, 47, was not believed to have contracted the coronavirus, the officials said. As the leader of the 21st Space Wing, Falzarano was also the senior commander for Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs and the nearby Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station. The wing and the two installations are critical to space-based operations, which he led for the Air Force since July 2019 and for the Space Force since December. Air Force officials on Wednesday described Falzarano as a talented space officer who was expected to become a general officer, likely in the Space Force. Space Force Gen. Jay Raymond, the chief of space operations, said Falzarano's death was “tragic" for the Air Force and Space Force. Before taking command of the 21st Space Wing, Falzarano spent a year working as Raymond’s executive officer at the former Air Force Space Command, which has since morphed into the headquarters of the Space Force.
Military moves into Cheyenne Mountain. The Senior Commander passes away.
June 25, 2020 - Malmstrom Air Force Base airman, who was declared dead on June 22. (Airman 1st Class Zachary Hada/Air Force) An airman from the 741st Maintenance Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana was declared dead Monday night, and his death is under investigation by local law enforcement. John Turner, a spokesman for the 341st, said Potter’s death occurred off-base, and that the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office in Montana is investigating. Turner would not comment further about the circumstances of Potter’s death.
Malmstrom AFB is one of three US Air Force Bases that maintains and operates the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. The 341st Missile Wing reports directly to Twentieth Air Force at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyoming. It is part of Global Strike Command headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana.
April 8, 2020 - An Air Force trainer at Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph in 2017. In a record year for suicides in the Air Force, the Air Education and Training Command based here and the Air Combat Command saw the most suicides in 2019 of any of the service’s major commands. In all, 41 airmen and civilians died by their own hand in the first quarter of last year. By midsummer the numbers had spiked so high that the Air Force’s chief of staff, Gen. David Goldfein, raised the alarm, ordering a “tactical pause” to raise awareness. In its worst year for suicides on record, the Air Force saw at least 112 suspected and confirmed suicides among active-duty, Reserve and Air National Guard personnel in 2019 — a 40 percent jump from the year before and the highest total since the Air Force began keeping track in 2003. The previous record was set in 2015.
Jan 13 2020 - BERLIN (AP) — The U.S. Air Force said Monday it is investigating the cause of death of two servicemen who died at a base in Germany last week. Airman 1st Class Xavier Leaphart and Airman 1st Class Aziess Whitehurst, both aged 20, were found unresponsive in a dormitory room at at Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany on Thursday evening and pronounced dead shortly afterward. “The cause of the death is still under investigation," said Valerie Seeley, an Air Force spokeswoman. "More information will be released as it becomes available.” She said no other base members were in the dormitory room and neither airman had room mates.
You start to notice trends when you read backwards to look forwards. They jump out at you. They grab you and say, hey dummy, wake up. This isn't to imply that any of us are dumb, because we aren't, but we are dumbed down.
February 02, 2019 - Washington(CNN) - Suicides among active duty military personnel assigned to US Special Operations Command tripled in 2018, in a disturbing and as yet unexplained spike, CNN has learned. While sudden spikes in suicide rates have been noted in both the military and civilian populations, military officials who spoke to CNN said what has happened at SOCOM is striking. The surge in SOCOM suicides comes as the Marine Corps and Navy are experiencing 10-year highs in the number of suicide deaths.
Look. Obviously there isn't any way to link concrete evidence of adversarial aggression to suicides. If the military was under attack and suffering casualties without responding, the effects on morale would be devastating. Or maybe they are responding and aren't disclosing the information. But I have a hard time believing that the world is getting crazier across the board and there isn’t correlation. If there's smoke, there's fire.
June 12, 2020 - Naval Aviation Schools Command CO and fellow Navy pilot killed in private plane crash.
It's not hard to see a pattern here. There are more unexplained deaths amongst the military, some at home and some on the bases. When you start with the data breaches in the fitness apps, then follow it with the medical and hotel data breaches, a correlation seems to fall into place. It's a Gray Zone war hidden in plain sight.
That's crazy talk, right? Congratulations, you're on an all inclusive vacation they call the New Normal. Keep Calm and Carry On. Don't worry, be happy. If you have nothing to hide, than you don't have to fear. So why are they trying to hide information from us? Because they are worried. Plain and simple.
You don't have military aircraft suddenly crashing at a forty percent higher than new normal rate. Suicides don't triple in roughly the same time frame across the branches of the military. Unexplained, or to be explained later, deaths in the Airforce don't suddenly start in key areas of defense and strike capability (and there are more out there, go ahead and search). If you wanted to win a war over natural resources, what better way to win than to demoralize the enemy and strip them of the will to fight?
Casualties can strip away an enemy's combat capabilities, causing him to panic and lose the will to fight - Unrestricted Warfare PDF.
Lose the will to fight. How? Lose your ability to "trust" the government and your society. Is there any better way to make the military lose faith in itself than to know airplanes are falling from the sky and your fellow soldiers are taking their own lives?
This is the New Normal and Fake News and Fact Checks. We're All In This Together and You're Either With Us or Against Us. If You Smell Something, Say Something. Keep Calm and Carry On. Flatten the Curve. Get Vaccinated and Protect the Herd.
You have nothing to worry about if you have nothing to hide.
And so we'll keep on playing this game of hide and seek. Because it's hidden in plain sight. And hindsight is 20/20. And we all need hindsight in the year 2020.
Keep your head up and eyes open. Talk soon.

2020.07.20 01:08 _soggycrouton [Routine Help] 25m, seeking some input/advice on my routine :)

Hi everyone,
I've been a bit of a skincare junkie for a good long while, and I've have gone through countless products, as I know lots of us here have. But, I feel like I have finally arrived at a good, effective routine, that seems to be working for me (with a few minor exceptions). I'd like to get some input/advice on places I could make improvements, including products you have used in the past/are currently using that you have found useful.
To begin, I'm a 25 y.o dude with oily, acne-prone skin. My acne tends to be a mixture of open and closed comedones, cystic pimples, and blackheads, and while I have had it mostly under control for the past year or so, I still breakout with some regularity (especially if I neglect my skin for more than a day), and the pimples tend to heal with hyperpigmentation. My preference is to avoid fragrance, essential oils, gimmicky/fad ingredients, and dyes, as well as botanical extracts that have no evidence supporting their use topically.
In particular, if there are any Dematologists around, I'd love to know your thoughts on topical Growth Factors. I know I'm probably a little young to be using them, but it's just something to keep in the back of my mind for the future.
In the AM, I:
  1. Cleanse: I tend to use gentle, pH-appropriate cleansers like the LRP Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cleanser, CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, Vanicream Gentle Skin Cleanser, Simple Foaming Cleanser, Hada Labo Rohto Cleansing Foam, Aveeno Sensitive Skin Cleansing Gel, etc.
    1. On occasion, maybe once or twice a week, I will use an AHA or BHA cleanser as a mask. Something like the Replenix Gly/Sal cleanser or the Glo BHA cleanser, or the PCA Blemish Bar, or the Glytone BHA cleanser. I don't tend to use leave on exfoliants anymore, as I use tretinoin in the evenings.
  2. Vitamin C Serum: This is a new step for me, though I remain skeptical of topical Vitamin C. I apply it directly to my skin after I rinse off the cleanser. I want my skin damp to try and maximize the potential for the Vitamin C to actually absorb. I purchased the Timeless Vitamin C. If it doesn't agree with me, I will try the DRMTLGY or PTR Vitamin Cs before I just bite the bullet and go for the SkinCeuticals, which has peer-reviewed studies demonstrating its efficacy.
  3. Humectant: I will re-wet my skin with either the Avene Spring Water or the Paula's Choice Replenishing Toner in order to provide water for the humectant to latch onto. During the Spring and Summer, I use the Hada Labo Premium Hyaluronic Lotion, and during the Fall and Winter, I use the Hada Labo Premium Hyaluronic Milk.
  4. Moisturize: Immediately on top of the humectant, I will apply my moisturizer. I tend to use the CeraVe Moisturizing Lotion or the CeraVe PM Lotion, but I also love the Neutrogena Oil-Free Sensitive Skin Moisturizer.
  5. Sunscreen: Once the moisturizer has dried, I will use sunscreen. My holy grail sunscreens are EltaMD's sunscreens, and I am currently using the UV Shield SPF 45. I actually prefer it to the UV Clear, which always leaves me looking super shiny. The UV Shield is also way better value-for-money, in my opinion.
In the PM, I:
  1. Cleanse: At night, I do a double cleanse, as there's data showing oil-based cleansers remove water-resistant sunscreens a lot better than just a cleanser alone.
    1. Oil Cleanser: I tend to rotate between 4 oil cleansers, though I've tried a number of others- the Hada Labo Rohto Cleansing Oil, the Simple Hydrating Cleansing Oil, the Clinique Take the Day off Cleansing Oil, and the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil.
    2. Water-Based Cleanser: Same as the morning options.
  2. Niacinamide: Currently, I am using the Inkey List's Niacinamide, and, because of the high concentration of humectants in the product, I apply it first, to damp skin.
  3. Humectant: At night, I apply the Hada Labo Perfect Gel to damp skin.
  4. Moisturize: I will usually use the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, though I also like the Cetaphil Ultra Healing Lotion with Ceramides.
    1. And good ole Aquaphor Ointment on my lips. It's the only thing that keeps the eczema away.
  5. Tretinoin: I apply it after my moisturizer has fully-absorbed, and have never had any irritation with it.
  6. Hydroquinone: I apply this as a spot treatment, after I have applied everything else.
I don't really use masks or anything, as they have never really done anything for me. I similarly don't really use leave-on exfoliants anymore, as I don't really have need for them beyond the Paula's Choice BHA9, which I use as a spot treatment. On occasion, I will use a stronger chemical exfoliant, but never on a day where I intend to apply tretinoin; I'll usually stop using tretinoin for a few days before and after I do an at-home "peel."
I do love how a good scrub feels sometimes, and when those moments arise, I will just use a washcloth to gently buff my skin when I cleanse. Though I do love the Eminence Organics Stone Crop Fizz-o-foliant.
What're your thoughts? Anything you think is lacking, or maybe needs improved? Any recommendations for products?
Cheers! :)

I hope everybody is staying safe and healthy.
I am looking for some input about my routine, and what your thoughts are about what I am currently doing. I'm on the search for some other BHAs to try; I've used the Paula's Choice 2% Liquid BHA for years and years, and it is phenomenal, but I'm curious about what else is out there. I'm also looking for input on topical Vitamin C.
I am a 25 year old dude with oily, acne-prone skin that has a tendency to get congested real quick if I neglect it for more than a day or so. I like to keep things relatively simple, day-to-day, and I tend to avoid anything with fragrance and essential oils and a bunch of botanical extracts.
My AM routine is generally:
  1. Cleanse: Vanicream Gentle Skin Cleanser, CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, La Roche Posay Toleriane Purifying Foaming Cleanser, Simple Foaming Cleanser, Hada Labo Rohto Cleansing Foam, Garnier Sulfate Free Cleanser, Aveeno Soothing Gel Cleanser, SkinCeuticals Soothing Cleanser, etc.
  2. Humectant-Specific Product: Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion, Hada Labo Perfect Gel
  3. Moisturize: Neutrogena Oil-Free Sensitive Moisturizer, CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, Vanicream Light Lotion, Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion, etc
  4. Sunscreen: EltaMD UV Physical SPF 41, EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, EltaMD UV Elements SPF 44, EltaMD UV Shield, Hada Labo UV White Gel SPF 50, Biore Kid's Skin Milk SPF 50
In the PM:
  1. Oil-Based Cleanser: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil, Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Oil, The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm, Hada Labo Cleansing Oil
  2. Water-Based Cleanser: Same as above, though sometimes I like using the Paula's Choice Optimal Results Hydrating Cleanser if my skin is feeling particularly dry and sensitive.
  3. Exfoliant: Paula's Choice 2% BHA, followed by the Avene Thermal Spring Water to re-moisten the skin
  4. Humectant-Specific Product: Same as above.
  5. Moisturize: Same as above, though I will use the CeraVe or Eucerin cream version of the lotions above during the winter.
  6. Lips: Eucerin Aquaphor, it's the only thing that keeps the eczema around my lips at bay.
I don't tend to do any masks, as I don't find them that helpful. And, I don't really use toners anymore, as I don't find I need them. When I do, though, my all-time favorites are the Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Enriched Calming Toner and the Paula's Choice Advanced Replenishing Toner. Those are just amazing.
I use a gentle AHA a few nights a week, something like the Paula's Choice 8% AHA or the Inkey List Lactic Acid, and I will do a stronger chemical exfoliation once or twice a month, or as needed. For this, I will go for something like the Neostrata High Potency Cream or the Glytone Exfoliating Lotion, but there are some others I have tried.
As much as I like scrubs, I don't tend to use them anymore, but I do like using a washcloth to gently buff the skin when I feel like I need it. I find it to be a more uniform, more controlled physical exfoliation that is excellent at removing any flakey skin I might have, especially on my lips.
I don't really use serums at the moment, as I'm trying to reorient things. I do love the Paula's Choice Redness Relief Serum, and her serums in general are top-notch. I'm currently testing the Good Molecules Discoloration Serum to treat some extremely stubborn hyper-pigmentation, and I have my eye on the new Peter Thomas Roth hyper-pigmentation treatment. I've also used Niacinamide in the past, and am thinking about bringing it back in, as it's such a fantastic ingredient. It would probably be the Ordinary's Niacinamide or Naturium's Niacinamide (any experience with this one? I know it's relatively new).
I also just got a prescription for tretinoin 0.05% again, and am only going to use it a night or two a week for a little while to re-acclimate my skin to it. I don't use any exfoliants the night I use it, and I apply it after moisturizer, once that has dried (you don't need to wait 20 minutes).
The big question is Vitamin C. I know the difficulty it presents as an ingredient, and I know the challenges it presents as a topical product. But I also know how important it is, and how good it is at what it does. Part of the challenge with it is actually getting it into the skin, but, there's some research indicating that absorption is improved in relatively acidic environments. So, should I decide to do it, I would apply it in the AM, following something like a SA cleanser, or an AHA or BHA leave-on product.
Do y'all think Vitamin C is a worthwhile investment? I figure, it won't hurt and can only help, so I'm leaning towards doing it. Basically everything I use at any given time is really cost-effective, so I don't mind shelling out for something like the SkinCeuticals, but was curious about your thoughts. If I do do it, I'd only be interested in L-Ascorbic Acid, as it's the only form of Vitamin C with any data supporting its use topically.
So what are your thoughts? Any other recommendations? I apologize for the long post.
Thank you in advance for your help and advice :)

All my skincare expenses and every skincare product I purchased till date since turning 30
So I was curious about my skincare expenses ever since switching to 30 plus skincare and logged down every product I purchased from 2017 until April 2020. As everything was already in Google sheets, I visualised the data for some fun.
**Some brief details about the dataset:**
I started my serious and informed skincare journey in 2017. Since then I have bought 47 products. I have excluded the free samples. The prices have been rounded off for convenience.
**Number of products purchased each year:**
2017: 13
2018: 12
2019: 13
2020: 9 (as of April 2020)
**Money spent on skincare since 2017:**

In total, I spent, €874 on skincare.
The most expensive item: Sulwhasoo Overnight Vitalizing Treatment - €43
The most inexpensive item: La Roche-Posay Roche-Posay Cicaplast Gel B5 - €7
Average cost per product: €18.60

The chart shows the breakdown of skincare costs per year.

**Origin of the products:**

Not all my skincare products are Korean. But collectively Asian products obviously dominate my skincare routine. French skincare is widely available in Germany and I particularly love LRP and Embryolisse moisturisers. I haven't really spent any time and effort on researching German skincare yet.

**Most purchased brands:**
CosRX: 7
Rohto: 6 (all those Hada Labo lotions and gels!).
Embryolisse (non-AB) and Missha: 3 each

Here is a messy pie chart showing all brands.

https://preview.redd.it/yiu5y93igjw41.png?width=846&format=png&auto=webp&s=5a1911e9bcae68dbe27b62bd446cbf910d7dc540

**Most repeat purchases:**
Embryolisse Lait Crème Concentré (non-AB) \- 3
CosRX Good morning cleanser - 2
Holika Holika Good Cera - 2
Naturie Skin Conditioner - 2 (Was accidental but no regrets! ;) )

**What type of products I purchased the most:**
The chart is self-explanatory.
I couldn't figure out how to label cica, aloe vera, propolis creams and gels so I piled them under '*healer*' category since I use them when my skin is in some trouble! ;)

If I would have further analysed the key ingredients, we'll see that most products are ceramide and HA. Snail goo, cica and retinol also appear frequently in my routine.

**Key takeaways from this fun little analysis:**

* I've slowly phased out the FTEs from my routine. I didn't see any visible benefits to my skin and FTE are generally the most expensive products in my routines.
* I rarely use oil cleanser. hah! I still have my HL oil cleanser that I got in 2017.
* I still have not found my HG moisturiser. Currently, I'm using Illiyoon ceramide ato lotion. It's been good so far, but I'll wait until it's finished to decide if I'll repeat buy it. Now that I'm going on tret soon, any moisturiser for my face will be tested to its limits.
* I have mixed feelings about sleeping masks. They're great and feel luxurious, but I'm not sure if they're worth the cost anymore. Maybe just using a heavy ceramide moisturiser sealed with some vaseline will do the trick?
* Going forward my goal is to make my skincare routine as simple as possible. I no longer want to have 7-10 steps routine unless I feel like treating myself.
* Any products (serums, emulsions or essences) that tackle my specific skincare needs will still stay a part of my routine. I will just use them less often.
* I also want to try more Asian makeup this year, especially those lip stains I keep hearing about. I'm an absolute sucker for MAC. It's my official HG makeup brand but I'm very impressed by Missha BB cream. These days my makeup routine just consists of Missha BB cream and lightly brushed MAC foundation powder.

Overall I was a little shocked to see how much I've spent over these years - nearly a grand on skincare! I don't regret it because honestly, my skin has improved SO much since I got serious about skincare.
I still have hormonal acne now and then, but my skin heals much faster now. It stays hydrated, looks plump and feels healthy. On a good day, I can even get away without makeup. It's been challenging but fun to find the right products for me. All these trials and errors of the past 3 years or so have helped me minimise my routine down to 4-5 steps.
Are my skincare expenses too much or just about average to our AB community? Anyone else gathers and analyses data on their skincare routine? What interesting insights you've found about your skincare habits? I'd really love to compare notes! <3

2020.02.28 06:01 assessment_bot [ Non-Fatal ] [ 02/12/2020 ] Cessna 560, Benbrook/ TX

On February 12, 2020, about 1527 central standard time, a Cessna 560 (Citation Encore) airplane, N654CE, was substantially damaged when two engine cowlings departed the airplane inflight over Benbrook, Texas. The air transport pilot and the one passenger were not injured. The airplane was registered to and operated by SC Cole Aviation, LLC, under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 as a corporate flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed for the flight, which operated on an instrument flight rules flight plan. The flight originated from the Dallas Love Field Airport (DAL), Dallas, Texas, at 1517, and was enroute to the Midland International Air and Space Port Airport (MAF), Midland, Texas.
The airplane was climbing through flight level (FL) 225 for FL 380, when the pilot heard a "loud crashing noise" followed by a "turbulent air sound" he described as similar to flying with the main landing gear extended. At time of the initial noise, the pilot reported the airplane was on a heading of 255, the airspeed was about 265 to 270 kts, and the autopilot system was engaged. The autopilot system was set to lateral navigation (flight management system 1) and the vertical speed was set for 1,500 ft per minute for climbing. The power was set to the climb N1 (the rotational speed of the low-pressure engine spool and the primary indication of engine thrust) setting as given by the N1 computer system.
The pilot reacted to the initial noise by disconnecting the autopilot system, announcing the issue to air traffic control (ATC), slowing down the airplane to 170 kts, and descending to 11,000 ft above mean sea level. There were no master caution or warning lights illuminated on the cockpit annunciation panel. The pilot initially thought the airplane hada main landing gear malfunction based of the sound of the airflow around the cabin. The pilot slowed the airplane further, cycled the main landing gear, cycled the flaps, and moved the flight controls. He reported everything checked out normal except the "turbulent air sound" which was exacerbated with rudder movement. The pilot decided the main landing gear was functioning normally and there was a problem with the empennage.
The pilot located the closest airport with a paved runway greater than a 5,000 ft length, contacted ATC, and proceeded to land at the Mineral Wells Airport (MWL), Mineral Wells, Texas. The pilot executed an uneventful landing at 1545 and shutdown the airplane without further incident. He reported that during the landing, he did not notice any abnormalities with the airplane and the flight controls felt "fine."
A postlanding inspection revealed the top and bottom cowling for the number 2 (right) engine were missing as shown below in figure 1.
A portion of the separated cowlings was found wrapped around the inboard section of the right horizontal stabilizer. A portion of the separated cowlings impacted the area between the leading edge of the vertical stabilizer and the top of the fuselage, resulting in substantial damage as shown below in figure 2.
The remaining pieces of the separated cowlings have not been recovered. The airplane was secured for a future examination of the airframe.
According to the operator, the airplane was maintained through an Approved Aircraft Inspection Program and the last maintenance work performed on the right engine occurred 153.6 flight hours prior to the accident.

2019.12.15 18:15 mwclarkson Fantasy Endurance - Bahrain 8 Hour and whole season results

Fantasy Endurance Bahrain Results
Fantasy Endurance Overall Results
Alkamel Data

And it's over! 2019 Fantasy Endurance has been a blast, but as the chequered flag fell in Bahrain the last racing lap was completed. And, joy of joys - no post race penalties!
Race Results
In LMP1 the Toyotas did what Toyota do best, and outclassed the privateers through dint of reliability and execution despite not being the fastest cars. Rebellion scored well despite the blameless collision on Lap 2 and a gearbox failure that cost them 3 laps. Ginetta's double DNF cost them dear.
LMP2 was pretty steady as well, with the #22 United Autosports car dominating from start to finish, with pole, most laps lead, fastest lap and the win. The #36 Alpine, #37 JCDC and #38 Jota all scored similar points, and the honey trap, bargain #26 G-Drive car was a surprisingly disappointing 5th.
GTE Pro was the dogfight we've come to expect, and with all cars finishing it was about picking the great #95 Aston Dane Train or, largely, one of the others. The Porsches still scored well points wise due to the size of the class and very strong resluts in quali and with fast laps.
If GTE Pro was about the #95, then GTE Am was all about the #57 Team Project 1 Porsche. Pole, most laps, least time in pits and the win it was a clear victory. The majority of points stayed in the finishing order, and it was a round to forget for the championship leading and heavily ballasted TF Sport Aston.
So, with a very tight battle for the podium, well done to F138 and Igame02 on their 3rd and 2nd places respectively. This race's winner, though, is a thorougly deserving WebtheWordwide who chose 3 class winners and a podium sitter to make 12 points over the rest of the field.

Championship Results
What about the WEC results for the year? Skeeter1020 hada terrible round and drops from 2nd to 4th in the standings. TeamThunderHawk5201 jumps up to third with a solid if un-spectacular round, and wbd_schumi leap frogs up to 2nd. That leaves our overall WEC winner for 2019 as AzuMuFan. Congratulations on a great, consistent season! The points from Silverstone onwards will carry over to next year's WEC championship so keep it up and you might be winning again come Le Mans!
And then the overall.
Despite a good run over the course of the year, SimTRU7H had a terrible run this race that put him out of contention for the podium - though in reality he wouldn't have quite made the top 3 without a perfect score. A special mention must go to AzuMuFan who managed a strong fifth, less than 170 points from the win depite missing out Daytona - a very high scoring round due to the extra points for 6 and 12 hour positions.
Third overall, then, with a consistent run except for the N24, is Pentanix. Second, and with almost 100 points over the nearest rival, is pinglebo - taking two race podiums along the way. And just 15 points ahead, having swapped points with pinglebo all the way through the season and conceding just a few points this round, our overall winner for the year is TeamThunderHawk5201 (aka GTR2 Legend in the Discord). Congratulations, and an undisclosed prize is already in the post (courtesy of Racing Line Designs)

I hope you've all enjoyed this year, it's been great to see the engagement continue to go up, with more people signing up for more rounds. There will be a post in the coming days looking for ideas to develop the game further (more refinements than wholesale revolution) so get your thinking caps on.
A quick reminder that the WEC points from Silverstone onwards will continue and while the overall points competition will remain January to December, the WEC championship will be scored per season.
Have a great Christmas break, until we start again for Daytona!

2019.12.03 05:56 mugrita I'm a 26 year old who works in publishing in NYC and makes approx. $40K/year

Hello, this is my first MD ever but I’ve been writing them in my head for a long time (complete with references to sexy times with my SO, humblebragging about my egg white and quinoa breakfasts, and skipping my $100 spin classes--jk I don’t do any of that) so I figured I might as well get roasted for my finances for real.
Basic Info:
Age: 26
Gender: Female
Location: New York City
Industry: Publishing
Occupation: Assistant
Section 1 - Debts and Assets
Retirement balance: $3841.31 (My work set up automatic contributions to an SEP-IRA. I have no idea what the fuck I am doing here and I need to ask. I didn’t go to fucking school for math.)
Savings: $2,120.14 (Regular savings account; I’m going to open a HYSA for 2020 when I get my Christmas bonus)
Credit Card Debt: $9,924.55, combined total across 2 credit cards (What makes me sad is that I paid off both of credit cards in full this time last year but I had an expensive year [moving out, going on family vacation twice, and buying Broadway tickets for the holidays] and now spend more of my income on rent, so it’s harder to pay it off as quickly.)
Student Loan Balance: $0 (I had a scholarship that covered room and board and we used credit cards to cover the rest. My mother is undocumented and at the time I was in college, my sister was a DACA recipient so I didn’t have anyone to co-sign a loan. The college expenses were part of the credit card balance I paid off in 2018.)
Other debt: $0
Section 2 - Income
Monthly take home after taxes, etc: $2,500 (I am an assistant who works in publishing; would rather not get specific in exactly which area. But if you have questions about the industry, I can answer what I know in the comments or via PMs.)
Section 3 - Monthly Expenses
Rent: $1,600 (I am subletting a 1-bedroom apartment in upper upper Manhattan. When it ends, I hope to join the lease. My boyfriend Pierre* and I are getting serious and while we’re not ready to live together, we did want more privacy to test the waters. Also, I love living alone.)
Health insurance: $0 (Covered by work)
MTA: $127/month for a monthly pass
Internet: $59.99/month (introductory rate for the first year)
Utilities: Between $60-90 per month, varies (I pay for gas and electric, water is paid by landlord)
Subscriptions:
*=Fake name. I hate the "My friends A, B, C," thing.
Day 1: 11/25
8:00am - Wake up and hit the snooze. I was up until 12:30 am baking keto chocolate zucchini bread that would just not bake all the way through.
8:15am - Finally get out of bed and start my morning routine. Skincare: Rhoto Hada Labo Gokyujyun foaming facial wash, Dr. Thayer’s Witch Hazel Toner, followed by Herbivore Prism Glow Potion, Cetaphil Pro Oily Skin with SPF 30. No make up. Cocoa butter lotion for the body.
With a non-stick frying pan, I fry up turkey bologna and scrambled eggs. I also eat a soggy banana that’s on the verge of turning completely black. I pack a lunch (tomato soup) and head out the door. I was hoping to get to work early, which will happen, but not as early as I would have liked. I was out of the office on Friday attending a local conference so I need to catch up on things.
9:30am - On the train to work and I text with Lily to discuss my mom's recent decision to move to Mexico. She lives in a pro-Trump state and as an undocumented person, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for her to fly under the radar. She’s fearful of being detained by ICE and so she’s going back on her own terms. I tell Lily that I feel like Trump won. He succeeded in building a culture of fear and intimidation. Lily tells me that with or without Trump in office, it is likely that Mom would have had to return to Mexico while we applied for her residency anyway (Lily is now married to a US citizen and has a green card). This doesn’t make me feel better and I want to cry.
9:46am - Arrive at the office 15 minutes early and get a head start on answering emails. Lily once asked me what I do all day and honestly, it’s a bunch of emailing. Emailing publishers to ask about status updates about deals, emailing clients to let them know about said status updates, emailing to chase after information I need on behalf of publishers or clients, responding to submissions, etc. Just emails, emails, emails.
1:21pm - Lily texts me a screenshot from an article about cheap living costs in Cancun. She jokes, “Why aren’t we moving with Mom too?” I text back that when Mom moves to Mexico, we should go with her to look at potential properties for her to buy so she isn’t renting indefinitely. I feel like crying again. I type up my expense report from the conference to distract myself. I don’t have a company card so I get reimbursed for using my personal card when I travel. The conference paid for my hotel and train so I just get reimbursed for my meals.
1:35pm - Lily texts me that we should set up a savings account that we can contribute to for Mom’s living expenses in Mexico. I admire my sister’s practicality in all of this, but I am not emotionally equipped to deal with this stuff when I am at work!!!!!!!!!!
1:54pm - I heat up my tomato soup while my boss writes my reimbursement check. I take my lunch to eat outside and I buy a bag of salt and vinegar chips from Pret a Manger to go with my soup ($1.69). After I eat, I go check out the holiday shops at Bryant Park and treat myself to a “giant s’more” ($8.17). The s’more is the size of my hand which makes me feel slightly better about the expense. I text Pierre about how sad I feel and go back to the office. I take the stairs instead of the elevator so I burn off some of the empty calories I just consumed. - $9.86
3:48pm - Pierre texts me his sympathies and sends me a Baby Yoda meme to cheer me up. Goddamn, I love him so much. And Pierre’s great too.
6:06pm - Finally done with work! I’m halfway to the train station when I realize I forgot my gym bag at work. I double back and while on the train, I eat a pre-workout snack of string mozzarella cheese and a baggie of roasted peanuts that I packed from home.
7:15pm - I do a 1 hour workout on the treadmill--30 mins of interval running and then 30 min incline workout, plus a cool down--but I feel sluggish and slow. Must be the s’more. Or maybe I’m still thinking about my mom.
8:40pm- Back at home! I shower and then eat some of the zucchini bread and a Greek yogurt for dinner. Too tired to cook a real meal. I call my mom and we talk more about moving plans. She plans to buy a home in a touristy area and rent part of it out. When I go home for Christmas, we’ll have to start cleaning the house out. Luckily, Lily lives near our Mom and will be able to store important family mementos.
Our plans sound cheerful but the way we talk reminds me of that same dejected feeling we had in 2016 when she came to visit me, post-Trump election. “Paciencia, fey, y fuerza,” is what we agreed to carry through the next four years. But it feels like we’ve run out.
While I’m on gloomy matters, I pay my bills. $1600 for rent, $65.03 for the electric bill, and $150 payment for each credit card. I deposit my reimbursement check and a $10 check I received from the Pew Research Center. I’ve recently been selected to be part of the Pew Research surveys and this is this first survey that I have been paid for, but I don’t know how often I will receive them. - $1,965.03, +$40.
I spend the rest of my evening setting up this Money Diary and watching 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way. The Jenny/Sumit drama is insane.
11:41pm - Finally got my MD set up and turn in. Nighttime skin routine: Vitamin C serum on neck and face; Estee Lauder Night Repair Creme on my eyes. I don't think it's really working but I want to finish the bottle before I try a new eye cream.
Day 2: 11/26
8:00am - Wake up and hit the snooze. Not as tired as yesterday but still want to stay in bed. Pierre texts me to wish him luck on his annual review. I text him back and then get distracted checking Reddit on my phone.
8:30am - Whoops. How did a half hour go by so quickly? I get out of bed, do my skincare routine, get dressed, etc. I eat a bowl of Special K for breakfast and pack my lunch (turkey bologna sandwich on a plain bagel, Ruffle chips, mozzarella cheese stick, 3 clementines, and a half-empty Coke zero that I bought over the weekend). I am an elementary school child.
9:10am - Catch the train and listen to Slate’s Dear Prudence podcast. In this episode, a LW complains about her friend, who whipped out her Macbook to finish writing a term paper in the middle of the LW’s wedding ceremony. The LW claims you can hear the click-clacking of typing in the wedding video and the friend even took a Skype call in the middle of the ceremony to chat with a study buddy (which you can also hear in the wedding video!). I am horrified.
9:42am - Arrive at the office and I’m the first one here. Half of our office, including my boss, took vacation days to get a head start on the holiday. This means I can listen to podcasts while I work since no one will really need me throughout the day.
I check my personal email before I look at work stuff and find an email from my bank, announcing that there was a “recent merchant data breach” and while my account wasn’t compromised, they’re going to send a new credit card which means I will have to update the information for my recurring payments. Great.
Okay, back to work. I grab a fun-size Snickers bar from the communal candy bowl for a mid-morning snack and get to work.
12:22pm - Ugh, Special K was not that filling. I drink hot water to help my stomach feel full but I am so hungry. I decided to eat my lunch at my desk even though it’s earlier than I usually eat.
6:45pm - Finally leave work! I stayed late to check my mom into her flight but check-in is based in her time zone, not mine so I could have left earlier. Grr. I text Lily and she promises to check Mom in.
8pm - Pierre and I get home at the same time! We make dinner together: spaghetti with truffle oil along with sauteed onions and kale, plus Trader Joe’s turkey meatballs. I pull out mini bottles of prosecco that I bought for Lily’s visit that went unused. While we cook, I pour out my feelings to Pierre.
I know that we are in a very privileged position: Lily and I can support my mother to have a very comfortable life in Mexico. We can afford to fly out to see her 3, maybe even 4 times a year. My mom will be able to stop living in fear. But there’s just something wrong about us not being in the same country.
Pierre knows a little of what I’m feeling because his mother is back in France and he misses her terribly, especially since she's been sick. (Nothing serious, but he feels bad that he can't be there for her.)
After dinner, we watch The Mandalorian. God, I would die for Baby Yoda. Pierre just got into Dragula so we watch an episode but I hate the format. It just feels so disorganized, especially compared to Rupaul’s Drag Race. Pierre gets squicked out by an elimination challenge featuring needles so we watch Call the Midwife so he can calm down. Poor guy.
Day 3: 11/27
12 am - Finally, we turn off Call the Midwife. I clean up the kitchen while Pierre gets dressed for his overnight shift. (He’s a security guard.) We kiss goodbye and he promises everything is set for him to come to Thanksgiving.
12:40 am - I stay up to finish the Call the Midwife episode and then go to bed. I call my mom even though it’s late because I just want to hear her voice. We talk through the airport pick up plans and say good night. I have the day off so I can stay up late.
10 am - Wake up and lay in bed. I text Pierre to ask for good thoughts. I’m super anxious about my mom flying even though she uses her Mexican passport and hasn’t had issues before. After a half hour, I get up to go to the gym and burn off some of my nervous energy. I only eat a mandarin for breakfast.
11:30 am - At the gym. Since I didn’t have a good breakfast, I do a low-intensity incline work out.
12:30 pm - Back at home. I shower and eat the keto zucchini bread for my brunch. I know I should eat more but I’m too anxious. I go to the train station, buy 2 weekly metro cards. One is for my mom and the other is a refill for me. Normally I would get the monthly but since I’m going home for the holidays in 2 weeks, it makes more sense to buy weekly passes. - $67.00
1:45 pm - First stop on my errands: Michael’s. I buy supplies to convert an arrowhead earring into necklace for Lily. I use a 40% off coupon so my total is $5.55
1:59pm - I buy two rotisserie chickens at Whole Foods for Thanksgiving. I’m not fucking with turkey with my tiny ass oven. - $16.69
2:38pm - Buy a half dozen plain bagels at Zabar’s for breakfast. - $5.60
3:00pm - I walk to the train station and pass the Macy’s parade balloons being inflated. So cool! Maybe next year I’ll come down to get a better look, but for now I need to get home.
3:35pm - At the farmer’s market near my train stop, I buy 3 lbs of grapes and a stalk of celery. I don't know how long this market is going to stick around but I hope it stays all year round. It's where I can get super cheap produce. I stop at the local grocery store and pick up sparkling cider. - $12.42
4:00pm - Finally home! I put away my groceries, prep the Thanksgiving sides, and clean up while I wait for my mom’s flight to land. I finish 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days and then pick up where I left off on 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way. I love the 90DF franchise but they’re releasing so many seasons at once that I can’t keep up.
6:08pm - My mom calls that she’s about to board her flight. Hurray! I can finally relax and eat leftover spaghetti before I go to meet her at the airport.
10:33pm - Take public transport to LaGuardia. I find my mom, who made friends with her seat partner on the flight and they exchange numbers so they can get in touch. We pick up her suitcase and I lead her to the rideshare pick up area. We pass a lost-looking couple in their 60s who are trying to figure out where to call an Uber so my mom adopts them. She helps the wife with her suitcase and tells them that I’ll show them where to go. They chatter about Thanksgiving plans on the way. I don’t know how, but my mom always makes friends wherever she goes. When we get to the pick up area, a parking lot attendant helps the couple call an Uber while I call a Lyft for us. - $41.00, including tip.
11:46pm - Finally home! I give my mom a quick tour of my apartment. She says it’s nice but I need to clean better. Moms. I’m ready for bed, but she asks me to put on her telenovela so she can unwind. I set her up (she’s watching Apocalipse, btw) and leave her on the couch while I go to bed.
Day 4: 11/28
8:30am - I wake up but my mom isn’t in bed with me. Evidently, she fell asleep on the couch. She’s an early bird so she has NBC playing, ready for the parade to start. We shower, get dressed, etc.
9:14am - Pierre arrives, having come straight from his overnight shift. He is, understandably, exhausted. He takes a nap in my room while my mom and I watch the parade and prep everything to warm up in the oven. We FaceTime with Lily, who is spending Thanksgiving with her neighbors.
12:28pm - Food is ready just as Pierre’s sister, Colette*, arrives. I'm serving rotisserie chicken, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, roasted veggies, and cornbread dressing. I wake up Pierre and I put on the Fleetwood Mac radio station on Spotify to listen to as we eat. It’s a nice time just eating our fill and talking. Pierre and I are discussing marriage and it’s nice to imagine that this will be what holidays will be like when our families combine. My mom says she likes Pierre but she seems lukewarm. Lily tells me that's exactly how she was like with her husband and now adores him as a son in law. I hope we'll have other opportunities for her to get to know Pierre.
3:00pm - We are done eating and put away the leftovers. I give some to Colette to take with her while Pierre gets ready to go back to work. Yep, he has to work again. I think Pierre’s job takes advantage of his eager to please nature and I tell him so, but he says he can handle it. Plus, he gets holiday pay. Colette also leaves and my mom and I take a short food coma nap.
4:48pm - We bundle up and head out to see the window displays at Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s. My mom is annoyed that so many shops are open. She complains that back home, Thanksgiving plans revolve around the football games and here, everything revolves around shopping. Still, we go into Macy’s to look for my birthday gift and take advantage of their “pre-Black Friday” sale. We find a BCBG genuine leather jacket for 50% off. The sales clerk says it’s the last one and it just so happens to fit me perfectly. My mom uses her Macy’s card to pay for it. I thank her for the birthday gift.
7:50pm - We stop to buy Palmolive dish soap at CVS. I’m running low at soap at home and my mom says my Trader Joe’s branded soap is not up to the task of handling Thanksgiving dishes. - $2.49
8:59pm - I take my mom to The View, the revolving restaurant within the Times Square Marriott. I get a margarita and she gets a non-alcoholic Apple Pie. We talk more about her upcoming move and I tell my mom my complicated feelings about it. She tells me that this is a good thing and Trump isn’t winning here. “I raised two daughters who are both great successes and now I’m going to retire and live my life. We won, not him,” she says. - $56.98
10:00pm - Back home! I shower and go to bed. My mom stays up to watch her telenovela.
Day 5: 11/29
10:00 am - Wake up and get ready to go. Mom fell asleep on the couch again. At this rate, I might as well just make her a bed out there. She insists that she’s fine. Anyway, today is all about my mom. I take her shoe shopping at a mom and pop store on the Upper East Side store that carries SAS shoes, her favorite brand. My mom is very picky and only finds one pair that she likes in her size. And it's on sale! - $20.00
12:49pm - I take my mom to El Museo del Barrio. El Museo is in partnership with The City Museum of New York next door so once we’re done with El Museo, we go next door and don’t have to pay a second admission fee. - $18.00
2:40pm - I take my mom to Grand Central Station to admire the main hall and we eat lunch in the food court. I order ramen and chicken dumplings for the both of us. - $33.57
3:30pm - I take my mom to oo35mm, my favorite beauty supply shop in Chinatown. I buy a bottle of facial wash for myself and convince my mom let me buy her an anti-wrinkle cream, a hair mask, and a pair of sheet masks for us. My mom is skeptical (she’s an Estée Lauder and Clinique gal) but I swear to her that the sales clerks know what they’re talking about in their recommendations. She does admit that my skin has cleared up a lot this past year so she agrees to let me buy the products for her. - $60.92
5:40pm - We walk to Little Italy and have a light dinner at a touristy restaurant that has a really good Napoleon. Maybe there still is good Italian food in Little Italy. - $35.06
8:00pm - We go see Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, the Broadway musical based on lives of The Temptations. (I bought tickets last week on Today Tix). My mom likes the show but while I agree that the singing and dancing is spectacular, the acting was bland. Also, no one said “Ain’t nobody coming to see you, Otis!” so that was disappointing.
11:00pm - Back at home and we gotta go to bed because we’re going to Philadelphia in the morning!
Day 6: 11/30
7:00 am - Wake up! This time, I waited until I heard my mom snoring on the couch and then gently roused her to get a night’s rest on an actual bed. We eat a light breakfast and head to Penn station.
11:30am - Arrive in Philly! I bought Amtrak tickets a week ago to return at 10pm but my mom thinks that’s too late so she asks me to change them for an earlier time. - $44.00
11:46 am - We leave the station by walking and head towards City Hall and Dilworth Park. I need caffeine so we stop at Starbucks. - $4.67
12:00pm - The holiday shops at Dilworth Park and Love Park are amazing! I find an artist who has this adorable cat print that would be the perfect Christmas present for Colette. I find the artist's Etsy page and see that she's going to be at the holiday markets in NYC. I vow to check out her booth there too even though my mom tells me to stop spending my money. Well, Mom, tell the lady to stop making cute stuff! - $36.47
1:30pm - We are both hungry so we go to Reading Terminal Market and get lunch. Mom orders a Philly cheesesteak and I get a tortellini pasta salad and kale juice. - $25.34
2:30pm - We take the PHLASH bus to do a loop around the sights. We see the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, go up the Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Art Museum, and then head to Old City to see the Betsy Ross House. Mom pays admission for the Betsy Ross House and I pay for our PHLASH fare. - $10.00
6:00pm - We are both tired and are ready to head home but still have a couple of hours at the station until our train. We still have leftovers from lunch so we finish those off and my mom buys herself a coffee and donut from Dunkin’. (She won't let me pay for it.) She lets me have a bite of the donut. While we wait, I pull up the Hulu documentary Tiny Shoulders: Rethinking Barbie on my phone for the both of us to watch.
10:30pm - Finally back home! Shower, get ready for bed, wait until I hear my mom fall asleep watching TV and then wake her up to come to bed.
Day 7: 12/1
9:30 am - Wake up! It’s my mom’s last day in NYC. I ask her what she wants to do. She says that she wants to do my laundry and scrub my bathtub. Moms.
We get dressed and eat a light breakfast. Then we attend Sunday service at my church. The sermon topic uses the recent climate change disasters as a jumping off point to discuss how climate change detrimentally affects the poor and marginalized and what our Christian duty is to help each other and the planet. My mom likes my church’s liberal, social justice oriented focus. She tells me that I should be a more active member and I am trying, but socializing with new people doesn’t come as easily to me as it does to her. Still, when one of the deacons asks me to read a passage from the Bible next week, I agree. Also, I donate $10 to the offering plate. - $10.00
2:00pm - After church, I take my mom to the Staten Island ferry so she can see the Statue of Liberty. My mom is impressed that we can get such a good view for free. Pierre texts me that he can meet us when he gets off at work at 4pm so I suggest we have an early dinner at my place before my mom goes to the airport.
2:34pm - After we get back to Manhattan, we take a bus to visit a church that was featured in The Devil’s Advocate (the 1997 movie with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino) but the doors are locked. They must have locked up after morning mass. I feel bad because my mom loves old churches and she was really hoping to see what the interior looked like. The rain is starting to come down so I check my mom’s flight and see it’s been pushed back to 10pm.
3:00pm - On the way home, we stop by Trader Joe’s and pick up fixings to help transform the Thanksgiving leftovers into a new meal. We get milk, sandwich bread, almonds, grape tomatoes, mandarin oranges, green grapes, and cereal bars. The plan is to make grilled cheese sandwiches and kale chicken salad. - $25.73
5:00pm - We’re back at home but Pierre has bad news. Towards the end of his shift, he noticed something suspicious on the CCTV and when they went to investigate, they found someone died in the building. He’s still stuck at work answering questions from the NYPD and his company and doesn’t know when he’ll get out. He sends his regards to my mom and tells her “Bon voyage!” Mom and I make dinner for ourselves and when I check her flight again, it’s back to its original departure time of 8pm. Shit! We rush to get everything ready and then I call the Lyft. In the car, I check the flight again and it’s been pushed back to 10pm. What the hell? - $30.86, including tip.
6:30pm - Mom and I are at the airport and are super confused. The boards still say her flight leaves at 8pm but my flight tracker says it’s been pushed. My mom doesn’t want to miss it so she decides to go ahead and go through security. We say goodbye and I wait until she passes through before taking public transport home.
8:30pm - Finally back home! I’m super exhausted and clean up a little. My mom calls and reports that her flight got moved to 9pm. The winter storm is coming in so I think flights are trying to figure out who is going to get out tonight and who’s not. I tell my mom to call me if her flight ends up being cancelled so I can send a car to pick her up. If you really care, my mom’s flight ended up leaving at 11:30pm and she landed back home around 2:30am. I called her a Lyft and stayed up tracking it until she called me to report she was in the house. - $23.10, my mom tipped in cash.
Breakdown
Food/drink: $227.62
Entertainment: $18.00
Transport: $215.96
Other: $2100.46
Total: $2562.04
Reflections
This wasn’t a typical week since it was Thanksgiving and I was hosting my mom, but my Day 1 is a typical spending day. I think I would have spent more if I had a different travel partner than my mother. She is extremely frugal and kept turning down stuff for us to do or buy even though I insisted it was my treat. In my defense, it’s my mom and I want to treat her. However, she did teach me good spending habits and it’s what gave me the push to find deals like the El Museo/City Museum partnership, the PHLASH fare, and ideas for things that we could experience for free or at a low-cost. I think I would say that I am better at spending money wisely but I want to get better at saving and building investments.
Okay, go ahead and roast me for still being on the family phone plan.

2019.11.01 20:29 sakana_no_ko Trip Report - Osaka, Kaga-Onsen, Tokyo - A casual shopping trip

A little bit about us
We are a late 20s couple. This was my boyfriends 2nd trip to Japan, and my 28th. My boyfriend and I love eating good food and drinking good coffee/alcohol. I primarily planned the trip as a combination of casually traveling and checking off some tourist sites (we went last year and did a whirlwind to see the major cities).
His interests:
My interests:
General notes on booking tickets, hotels, language etc.
Accomodations:
Tokyo: Tokyu Stay Yutenji (7 nights - ¥84,608)
Osaka: Earthmans Hotel and Kafee (Amemura) (4 nights - $447.00)
Kaga-Onsen: Beniya Mukayu (1 night - Japanese Premier Tatami Garden View - ¥92,260 for two people)
October 17 (Thu): LA/Tokyo
We departed LAX at 12:00PM, and landed 3:55PM at Narita Airport. Immigration and Customs took around 10 minutes, while waiting for our luggage took another 10 minutes. We then headed down to pick up our Pocket Wifi and exchange our JR Passes/reserve Shinkansen seats (approximately 45 minutes, with all the rugby folks in line). We then boarded N’EX to Tokyo Station, and then waited for the 7:00PM Hikari to Shin-Osaka. We arrived in Osaka around 9:45PM, and arrived at our hotel around 10:40PM. Stopped by Lawson to pick up some highballs and late night snacks, then passed out.
October 18 (Fri): Osaka
We woke up around 7:30AM, showered and unpacked. We left to Kuromon Ichiba around 8:30AM, and arrived at 9:00AM. Breakfast at Takoyaki Wanaka (Michelin Bib Gourmand), Nishikawa Sengyou (oysters) and then had a smoke break (coffee and toast) at a small kissaten nearby. Definitely visit earlier in the morning because from 10:30AM onwards, it was ridiculously full. From here we walked to Dogayasuji to shop for a kitchen knife for a friend. I found a chef’s knife for 11,000 yen, and the price was knocked down to 10,000 with tax-free. Dogaysuji was probably my favorite part of walking around the Namba area, since there were no tourists and the types of kitchen goods were very interesting to see (I’m a sucker for specialized use utensils and the outdoor sign lights).
From Namba, we left to Kyobashi to eat at Izakaya Toyo (from the Netflix special on street food). My boyfriend was really looking forward to eating at Toyo, and I was rather ambivalent on it. We lined up at 2:15PM, and then line was already spilling into the street. Once Toyo opened at 2:30PM however, the line moved up quite quickly. It’s definitely not a spot where you get to chat and chill out - once you finish eating, it’s expected that you pay and leave. I feel bad saying this, but it was the most overhyped part of our trip. I knew that due to the Netflix special, there would be many foreigners but I wasn’t expecting 98% of the shop and line to be only other travelers. Toyo-san himself honestly looked stressed every time he blow-torched the tuna- the amount of phones pulled out and filming every single time was distressing just as a customer. The food was great, however for the price point and the toro still being relatively frozen, I wasn’t impressed. The uni was mediocre, but the ikura was excellent. This definitely is a spot you could go once, snap a photo and then never have to come back to again. Some friends in Osaka used to go to Toyo but haven’t returned after the Netflix episode due to it being insanely busy at all times.
After Toyo, we went back to the hotel to take a quick nap before having dinner with my parents. We were all tired and cranky, so we chose a forgettable izakaya in the Hankyu department store that seated us immediately. Even with sharing food and getting three rounds of drinks, the total was around $150.00.
October 19 (Sat): Osaka/Kyoto
This was my dedicated shopping day, as there were several stores I wanted to shop at in a 10 minute walk radius of each other. We started at the Pokemon Shop (I ended up buying a Snorlax and Psyduck plushie, among other things), then made our way to the Hanshin Tigers official store (huge Tigers fan), then finished at the Jump shop (I was looking for Demon Slayer merch, but the Jump Store was so small and barely had any merch - everything was gearing up for Haikyuu Season 4). From there we had okonomiyaki at a small shop under the tracks near the Hep 5 department store. For two okonomiyakis and two beers, it was ¥3000. After that, we headed to Kyoto to meet up with friends for an event at NHK. Since we had time to kill, we went to Nishiki Market around 4:30PM to see if it was different than Kuromon. Nishiki was awful. The small street is over-filled to the brim with tourists, and it took around 30 minutes just to walk from one end of the market to the other. All of us hated it, and after downing a beer, we left to the NHK Kyoto building. One of my friends is an announcer at NHK, and we came to support him with an event he was throwing.
We decided to watch the rugby match at a nearby Hub, however my boyfriend and I were so tired that we just left and went back to Osaka. Since he was hungry, and we were trying to push through our jet lag before heading to Tokyo I found a ramen spot close by (Gyogyogyo). The ramen was out of this world good - I ordered a salt, wakame, duck breast ramen, and my boyfriend had some sort of black sesame ramen. The thoughtfulness of the ingredients chosen, and the chashu were impeccable. I later found out that it was awarded a Bib Gourmand lol. There were no English menus or signs, and the location was rather difficult to find as well.
October 20 (Sun): Osaka/Kobe
We had a slow morning waking up, but left our hotel around 9:30AM for my haircut at Fam International at 10:00AM. I did a cut/treament and my stylist Ken, was fantastic. I didn’t even need to show him a photo, as he understood from my description how I wanted my hair to look. I always get a haircut whenever I’m in Japan, as the level of service/quality/price is fantastic. For my cut/Tokio Treatment it was ¥8700 (I sprung for the most expensive treatment option - otherwise it would have been around ¥5500). After that, we headed to Kobe to meet up with more friends for the Japan/South Africa rugby match. We went to this amazing 8-seater restaurant nearby Kobe Sannomiya that specializes only in katsuo (bonito). We had katsuo tare, spaghetti, salted tataki and an amazing selection of sake. Like all small restaurants in Japan, no English menu and the chef did not speak any English. From there we went to Bar Drop In, which was a sports pub that we reserved a table at. Surprisingly, it was just our group of 8, and a couple other Japanese couples watching the game. It was wonderful watching the game in a non-crowded sports bar- I definitely recommend this bar if you’re ever watching a game in Kobe. We all drank when the Brave Blossoms lost :(
October 21 (Mon): Osaka -> Kaga Onsen
After we left and checked out of Earthmans, we headed to the Suntory Distillery for our 11:00AM reservation. We arrived early to shop at the gift shop before the whiskeys were sold out, and because we didn’t have much time afterwards. We bought the single malt whiskey (¥6000), the Ao blend (¥5000) and my favorite, the Suntory Bossa Nova CD Mix, among other small items. My total for everything (pins, whiskey, pens, CD, alcohol) was around ¥20,000. There were no rare bottles for sale, which was fine by me. If you are a Suntory fan, there is no way you can miss out on coming here. As a side note, I had a reminder to book tickets the moment they went on sale. I think I was up around 8:00AM PST to book the tickets in JST time. Everything was booked up in 10 minutes, so set your alarms. Our tour was nice, and they have an audio guide app for other languages. There is a small tasting at the end of the tour where you taste the different stages of whiskey, but my boyfriend and I booked it to the actual bar inside, since you can only drink there after your tour. I tasted the Yamazaki 25, Hakushu 25, and Hibiki 30 for under ¥8,000. By the time we departed Yamazaki I was also incredibly drunk but very pleased. From there we headed to Kyoto station to change to the Thunderbird going to Kaga-Onsen.
The trip to Kaga took around 2.5 hours, and we mainly napped. We arrived at 4:20 to Kaga-Onsen station and were picked up by a Beniya Mukayu staff member. Beniya Mukayu was the highlight of our trip, and the best ryokan I have ever stayed at. From the moment we stepped out of the hotel car, we were greeted by all staff members who were so friendly and kind. We then toured the hotel while the staff were bringing our luggage to our room. We stayed in the Japanese Premiere Garden Suite (basically the cheapest option), but this was perfect for two people. After a quick dip in our outdoor balcony onsen, we then walked around the grounds before for a tea ceremony with the third-generation owner of the inn (it was more like a quick introduction to tea ceremony than an actual ceremony). The tea was harvested nearby in Kaga-Onsen, and the wagashi was also made in house at Beniya. After the ceremony, we walked around the ryokan again, as there was a Kenya Hara art installation I was interested in seeing. From there, we went to dinner and was served a sumptuous kaiseki course meal, and I opted for the sommelier pairing. Dinner was amazing - some of the flavors and textures being combined were one of a kind, but so perfect. I guess hairy crab and sea snail are in season, so we had a bunch of dishes that featured them. After dinner, we opted to shower and use the balcony onsen before heading into Kaga-Onsen for a cocktail. The ryokan has an elevator that connects it with the town (something like you would find in an alpine mountain hotel) and it was quite easy to walk around. We went to Bar Swing, a jazz and cocktail bar that looked like it hadn’t been updated since the early 90’s. The owner and his wife were so elegant, and the Negroni I ordered was top-notch. If I wasn’t quite drunk from dinner, I would have ordered more cocktails but there’s always a next time. Once we returned I tried the women’s outdoor bath which was great and relaxing. I was the only person in at 12:45AM, and it was the best feeling just being in the outdoor bath with the cool mountain air.
October 22 (Tue): Kaga-Onsen-> Tokyo
I somehow managed to wake up at 6:45AM, and join the owner’s spouse for a morning yoga session, which got rid of my hangover pronto. It was so relaxing to meditate and look over the treetops of the Beniya garden and listen to the staff begin preparations for breakfast. We then had a traditional Japanese breakfast, accompanied with juice blends from fruit that were grown near Beniya, and hand-selected by the staff. Probably the healthiest meal I’ve ever had in my entire life. We then had approximately two hours to shower, dip in the outside onsen and finish packing. Around 11:00AM, we checked out and headed to our reservations at Sushi Ikkan, a twenty minute drive from Beniya. This was a great spot to have lunch before we departed to Kaga-Onsen station. From Kaga-Onsen, we took the Thunderbird to Maibara, and then transferred to the Tokaido shinkansen towards Shinagawa station. Once we got off at Shinagawa, it was about 7:00PM and we called a taxi to our hotel in Yutenji. Since we were incredibly tired, we stopped by a Tex-Mex place and had yakiniku/karaage tacos, which quite honestly, were awful.
October 23 (Wed): Tokyo
We woke up early to queue up for the Ghibli Museum at 10:00AM. I was surprised at how busy it was on a Wednesday morning, but we managed to get in with the first round. After going through the museum and gift shop, I can say that unless you are a die-hard Ghibli fan, or have young children, there is no need to return to the museum. We walked through Inokashira Koen to Kichijoji, and had a delicious omurice lunch at Kitchen Kuu (a frog-themed diner that looks like it hasn’t been updated since 1987, and the owner is obsessed with frogs). After that, I went camera shopping and found a Contax T2 in B condition for ¥60,000 and we left to Shibuya.
I managed to win the foreigner lottery to see Perfume at the newly opened Shibuya Line Hall. They were performing their 2019 Reframe show, which was so amazing, holy shit. Like in most Japanese halls, we were sitting down the whole time. I saw Perfume at Coachella and while that was probably one of the best live shows I’ve seen, it was nice being forced to look at the visuals rather than dancing around. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to a crowd applauding after a song though. I teared up a little at the end when they were thanking everyone lol. After that we were pretty hungry so we went to Kushiwakamaru in Naka-Meguro. This is an outstanding yakitori spot that is one of my favorite places in Tokyo. You either have to go super early and line up, or go later around 9:00PM when everyone is starting to finish dinner. Some parts sell out, so earlier the better. After that we went back to Yutenji and passed out.
October 24 (Thu): Tokyo/Kamakura Half-Day
We left Yutenji at 8:00AM, and arrived at Kamakura station around 9:00AM. From there we bought the Enoden one day pass, and headed to Kotokuin to see the giant Buddha. After a couple photos, we walked back to Hasedera which was along the way and strolled along. The scenic overview at Hasedera is one of the best in Kamakura and I wish it wasn’t cloudy the day we went. After Hasedera, we left to join my parents and aunt for lunch at Matsubara An (famous soba spot). We opted for the deluxe lunch course, and upgraded to the famous cold sudachi soba that they are known for. I split away from my parents to go to Kamakura Loco Mart and pick up some shirts before joining them at Zeniarai Benten shrine. Zeniarai Benten is one of my favorite shrines in Kamakura, as it’s out of the way, up a hill and you actually get to do something rather than just walk around and pray. We washed our money, and then my boyfriend and I headed back to Tokyo to take a quick nap before heading to dinner with friends. We went to Yakiniku Jumbo Hanare, a famous yakiniku spot in Tokyo that serves wagyu. My friend called a month ago for a 6 seater reservation, and the only time slot they had was 9:00PM. But wow, this spot has become my new favorite in Japan. The meat was soooo tender and tasty - I’ve never had yakiniku taste like that ever. We ordered almost two of every meat, along with the famous wagyu nigiri that they’re known for. The total bill, including drinks was 45,600, which was not bad at all!! Afterwards, we drank at a conbini before all departing to our respective hotels/homes.
October 25 (Fri): Tokyo
A very lazy start to our morning. We had breakfast at Branch in Yutenji (literally next to the hotel), which was one of my favorite cafe’s I’ve been to. The ownechef used to live in France for 3 years, and then finally returned to Tokyo to open her own French cafe. The spot is so charming, the food is so good and fresh and everything about the spot was amazing. I needed to lay down since I was really tired (hungover) and took a quick nap. After that, we headed to Ginza to meet my friend at WeWork. After drinking and catching up there, we went to craft beer bar iBrew in Ginza, which was alright. The selection of craft beers on tap were great, but the execution of 50% of the beers were awful. After that, we headed to Another8 bar in Meguro for some craft beer in a hip, quiet area. The beer on tap was fantastic, as was their food. Beer in Japan is always pricey, but whatever. Since it was a Friday night and we had no reservation, plus more people coming, we were given a time limit of 2.5 hours. After that we found a darts bar nearby and proceeded to get smashed on highballs. Since most people left before 12 for the last train, a couple of friends and I moved onto karaoke until 3:00AM, feasting on McDonald’s and ginger high balls, then returned home.
October 26 (Sat): Tokyo
We woke up around 8:30AM to drop my mom off in Odaiba for her girl time get-together. Immediately after dropping her off, we headed to the Jump Store in Odaiba and looked for a bathroom (we were still drunk). I found some Demon Slayer merch that I was looking for and we then headed to the Shinjuku/Yoyogi area to eat ramen and drink some more at Watering Hole. If you have to go to one craft bar in Tokyo, please come here. Everyone is so friendly, and they have a great food menu, and even better tap list. We left early to avoid drunk rugby fans in the subway later, and basically slept from 7:00PM onwards.
October 27 (Sun): Tokyo
After somewhat sleeping the whole night, we woke up at 7:00AM to shower and get ready for my grandmother’s first year funeral rites. We headed to Yokohama and basically were with family until 3:00PM or so, and then headed back to Tokyo to take a quick nap. After changing, we met up with my parents in Shibuya to have their 40th anniversary dinner at Cafe Legato in Dogenzaka. If you like Italian food, gorgeous city views and nomihoudai, you would love this spot. I was pleasantly surprised as my dad chose the spot and it was a wonderful experience overall. Italian food in Tokyo can be such a hit or miss, but this spot was great. The main meal was beef tongue simmered in red wine, which was so soft and tender. Since we were all tired from the early morning, we returned back to the hotel.
October 28 (Mon): Tokyo
We had breakfast at Branch again (seriously, one of the best cafe’s in Tokyo) before heading over to Hotel Gajoen in Meguro. There was an ikebana exhibition in the Hyakudan Kaidan “100 Steps” which was quite lovely. After checking out the gardens (gorgeous) and seeing many engagement photoshoots in traditional kimono’s, we ate at the kaiseki restaurant Tofutei. The lunch was excellent, and just what we needed for a hangover cure. After lunch, we split from my parents and headed to Loft in Shibuya.
Loft is my favorite store in the entire world, and you could literally shop for any person in there. After dropping roughly ¥50,000 on numerous souvenirs, Christmas and birthday gifts we then headed to meet up with my best friend and his fiance at a cute izakaya in Kayabacho. The izakaya was excellent, and had a crazy good wine list (a lot of natural wines, and smaller wineries). The shop is also known for cooking with suppon (softshell turtle) and we had many interesting bites, including suppon karaage. Personally, I am not a fan of suppon but my boyfriend really liked it. It kind of tasted like gamey chicken? We then headed back to the hotel to pack. I then realized I went a little overboard with shopping, as my big luggage was full and I would have to buy a suitcase at the airport.
October 29 (Tues): Tokyo
After checking out of the hotel, we stashed our luggage in Shibuya station and did last minute shopping at Don Quijote and Tower Records for friends and family (snagged a truck load of Hada Labo skincare items for my friend at Don Quijote, and an Arashi Best Hits CD for myself). I finally managed to have lunch at Katsu Midori in the Seibu building (been trying for 7 years, but the line is nuts everytime) by eating there at 11:30AM. We went overboard on the sushi, but ¥6400 for 21 plates of some of the best kaiten I’ve ever had is a steal. If you come, either come at 11:30 AM, or be prepared to wait an hour after lunch.
We then boarded N’EX to head to Narita, bought some luggage at the airport since I went overboard with shopping at Loft and checked in. Security was a breeze, and we were by the gate in under 15 minutes. After buying several Suntory highballs for the plane, last minute souvenirs (Amazake Pocky + Yubari Melon Kit Kat) we boarded the plane back to LAX and said goodbye to Japan.
Some final thoughts and food notes

https://www.otcmarkets.com/stock/CBDL/news/CBD-Life-Sciences-Subsidiary-Developing-Line-of-CBD-Based-Coffee-Products-Including-Weight-Loss-Coffee--Brain-Booster?id=233652
SCOTTSDALE, AZ, July 09, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- via NEWMEDIAWIRE – CBD Life Sciences Inc. (OTC: CBDL) is pleased to announce that its wholly owned subsidiary, LBC Bioscience, Inc. (LBC), has finalized the development and is preparing to launch a CBD infused line of coffee products for the US domestic market. The product line will initially consist of four products including a weight loss coffee and a brain booster. It is expected that the products will be available for purchase within the next three to four weeks.
Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide. Millions of consumers all across the United States cannot start their day without a hot cup of coffee. Recent statistics show that American consumers drank on average two cups of coffee per day. In the U.S., the top selling coffee product was dry coffee, which generated $9.37 billion in sales in 2018 while liquid coffee generated about $2.66 billion.
Although people have been drinking coffee for hundreds of years, there are still new trends entering the market every year - the most recent being cold brew and nitro coffee. Cold brew is, as the name implies, brewed with cold temperature water over a longer period and has a higher caffeine concentration than regular coffee. Nitro coffee is infused with nitrogen and can be served like beer. In 2017, cold brew coffee experienced an 80% growth in sales while regular hot coffee sales saw a 3% percent decline. LBC Bioscience, with its introduction of CBD infused coffee, is positioning itself to maximize and leverage the current CBD craze by being one of the first to market with a CBD based coffee line.

2019.06.04 02:10 The-Truth-Fairy [META] There has been a flood of media criticism posts here lately that are so bad that they look identical to fake posts journalists would submit to discredit media critics and this sub. Here is an actual media criticism post that looks at Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, RT, CBS, NYT, WaPo, etc.

48 examples and counting of misleading and false reporting coming from the major media networks. There are many thousands more out there, but these are some of the more recent, important examples. Please don't hesitate to use the comments to add more.
Obviously the media is not perfect and everyone makes mistakes, but the direction the mistakes go, depending on which outlet you are looking at, tends to be the same direction. An outlet's bias will sometimes prevent them from doing their due diligence before publishing. CNN is usually not going to make a mistake that happens to make Wikileaks look good for example. It will be the other way around. The same goes for Fox News. They are unlikely to make a mistake that happens to make recreational pot seem reasonable.
It's also my understanding that many of these examples went under the radar. Media outlets tend to put way more effort into publishing the original false claim than they do in making sure everyone who was fooled by it gets the correct information later on. It is possible that you have never heard that some of these claims were false. That was the case for me when I was digging through the corrections. I believe this is on purpose. Having to correct your "bombshell" report is embarrassing, so it often seems that they would rather do the bare minimum and hope few people see the correction.
1) Former MSNBC host Ed Schultz recently revealed that he was told what to cover and what not to cover at MSNBC, saying that the President of MSNBC Phil Griffin was a "watchdog." An example he gives is when he wanted to cover Bernie Sanders announcing his run for president, and Phil Griffin calls him telling him to report on something else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkGu3PDKFIg&t=10m10s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkGu3PDKFIg&t=10m10s
2) From CNN
Washington (CNN) In his much-anticipated congressional testimony on Thursday, fired FBI Director James Comey will dispute President Donald Trump's blanket claim that he was told he was not under investigation multiple times, according to sources familiar with Comey's thinking. https://web.archive.org/web/20170606234238/http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/06/politics/comey-testimony-refute-trump-russian-investigation/index.html
CORRECTION AND UPDATE: This article was published before Comey released his prepared opening statement. The article and headline have been corrected to reflect that Comey does not directly dispute that Trump was told multiple times he was not under investigation in his prepared testimony released after this story was published. http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/06/politics/comey-testimony-refute-trump-russian-investigation/index.html
3) Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand https://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/us/20generals.html
4) From CNN
"In the aftermath of the retraction of a story published on CNN.com, CNN has accepted the resignations of the employees involved in the story's publication," a spokesman said Monday evening. The story, which reported that Congress was investigating a "Russian investment fund with ties to Trump officials," cited a single anonymous source. http://money.cnn.com/2017/06/26/media/cnn-announcement-retracted-article/index.html
5) Fox News uses pictures of Eagles players praying to pretend they were kneeling for the national anthem (no Eagles player actually did) https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2018/06/05/fox-news-fails-to-recognize-praye
6) From Wash Post
Original title that they have changed, which you can verify by checking the url: "Russian hackers penetrated U.S. electricity grid through a utility in Vermont, officials say.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/russian-hackers-penetrated-us-electricity-grid-through-a-utility-in-vermont/2016/12/30/8fc90cc4-ceec-11e6-b8a2-8c2a61b0436f_story.html
Correction article: Russian government hackers do not appear to have targeted Vermont utility, say people close to investigation https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/russian-government-hackers-do-not-appear-to-have-targeted-vermont-utility-say-people-close-to-investigation/2017/01/02/70c25956-d12c-11e6-945a-76f69a399dd5_story.html
7) Veronica Rocha of CNN dishonestly zooms in video of Trump to make it look like he was the only one who dumped his entire box of fish food into the pond during fish feeding event with Japan's Shinzo Abe. Abe actually chucked his entire box of food first, but you can't see that with the unnecessary zoom: https://twitter.com/VeronicaRochaLA/status/927400669996130305/photo/1
8) The Guardian also wrote up an entire article about this fish feeding event criticizing Trump for his lack of patience and how he may have put the fish into danger without even mentioning that Abe chucked in his box first: http://archive.is/fcGYi They later corrected the article, but didn't mention that they had to change a large portion of the article, including the title: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/nov/06/trump-dump-president-throws-entire-box-of-fish-food-into-precious-koi-carp-pond?CMP=twt_gu
9) Slate: Was a Trump Server Communicating With Russia? http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/cover_story/2016/10/was_a_server_registered_to_the_trump_organization_communicating_with_russia.html
Debunked by Wash Post https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/11/01/that-secret-trump-russia-email-server-link-is-likely-neither-secret-nor-a-trump-russia-link/?utm_term=.0d6dc14257ad
10) Fortune Magazine: Correction: This story originally ran under the headline “C-SPAN Confirms It Was Briefly Hacked by Russian News Site.” C-SPAN confirmed that an interruption took place but has not yet identified the cause of the interruption. http://fortune.com/2017/01/12/cspan-rt-interruption/
11) The Guardian: "This article was amended on 29 December 2016 to remove a sentence in which it was asserted that Assange “has long had a close relationship with the Putin regime”. A sentence was also amended which paraphrased the interview, suggesting Assange said “there was no need for Wikileaks to undertake a whistleblowing role in Russia because of the open and competitive debate he claimed exists there”. It has been amended to more directly describe the question Assange was responding to when he spoke of Russia’s “many vibrant publications”." https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/dec/24/julian-assange-donald-trump-hillary-clinton-interview
12) New York Times: James Comey: a controversial New York Times story in February about alleged contacts between Trump intimates and Russian officials was bogus. “In the main, it was not true,” he said. “The challenge, and I’m not picking on reporters, about writing stories about classified information is the people talking about it often don’t really know what’s going on and those of us who actually know what’s going on are not talking about it,” said Comey during questioning from Sen. James Risch (R-Idaho). “And we don’t call the press and say, ‘Hey, you got that thing wrong.’ ” https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2017/06/08/in-the-main-it-was-not-true-comey-denounces-new-york-times-story/
13) New York Times: Notorious "17 intelligence agencies agree" claim retracted by the New York Times. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/29/pageoneplus/corrections-june-29-2017.html (It was actually 3 agencies according to Former director of National Intelligence Clapper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NevA1FFfj7s)
14) NBC News:
“EXCLUSIVE: Putin does not deny having compromising information on President Trump in interview with @megynkelly.” https://twitter.com/keridouglas/status/871514544480415744/photo/1
"CORRECTION: Putin denies having compromising information about President Trump, calls it nonsense https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/871519148085583873
15) from ABC News:
JUST IN: @BrianRoss on @ABC News Special Report: Michael Flynn promised "full cooperation to the Mueller team" and is prepared to testify that as a candidate, Donald Trump "directed him to make contact with the Russians." https://web.archive.org/web/20171201162158/https:/twitter.com/ABC/status/936628560374071296
CLARIFICATION of ABC News Special Report: Flynn prepared to testify that President-elect Donald Trump (not candidate Trump as initially reported) directed him to make contact with the Russians during the transition -- initially as a way to work together to fight ISIS in Syria, confidant now says. http://archive.is/WDuoW
Mediaite on ABC's error: https://www.mediaite.com/tv/abc-news-issues-on-air-clarification-to-report-about-flynn-russian-outreach-and-trump/
The reason this "news" was so big was because it was basically evidence of collusion. After they corrected it, it's no longer evidence of collusion. It's just normal presidential business.
16) ProPublica now retracting parts of its story that linked Gina Haspel, Trump's choice to lead the CIA, with waterboarding of a suspected al-Qaida leader. "Nearly every piece of the reporting that you are seeking comment on is incorrect in whole or in part." https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/03/16/594282245/propublica-corrects-its-story-on-trump-s-cia-nominee-gina-haspel-and-waterboardi

18) According to a former RT reporter, "We do work for Putin. We are asked on a daily basis if not to totally ignore then to obscure the truth." https://www.yahoo.com/news/russia-today-reporter-quits-over-lies-ukraine-170626565.html
19) NBC posted an article claiming Menendez, charged with bribery and fraud, was a Republican.
CORRECTION (Sept. 6, 2017, 5:35 p.m.): An earlier version of this article misstated the party affiliation of Menendez. He is a Democrat, not a Republican. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/menendez-says-not-once-have-i-dishonored-senate-office-bribery-n799136
20) A New York Times story on the bribery trial of Sen. Robert Menendez (N.J.) initially failed to mention his party (Democratic). https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2017/09/07/new-york-times-standards-editor-menendez-democrat-omission-was-a-dumb-mistake/
21) Fox News ran footage of Mark Sanford admitting to an extramarital affair on Wednesday with a Chyron identifying the South Carolina Republican — near tears — as a D, for Democrat.
22) When former congressman Mark Foley admitted to having problems with alcoholism — after reports that he had behaved inappropriately with congressional pages — Fox News also identified him as a Democrat. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/24/fox-news-identifies-sanfo_n_220377.html
Here are Fox's four fake experts:
23) Fox News Apologizes for Featuring Veteran Who Lied About Being a Navy SEAL https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/20/business/media/navy-seal-fox-news.html
24) A Fake Antifa Member Trolled A Fox News Host https://www.buzzfeed.com/blakemontgomery/a-fake-antifa-member-trolled-a-fox-news-host-and-the?utm_term=.xeM4eMzGZq#.pvaGPzKDA6

26) A man described as a Swedish defense and national security adviser appeared on Fox News last week to defend President Trump’s claim that criminal immigrants are wreaking havoc in Sweden. But according to court records and Swedish officials, the man, identified as Nils Bildt, has a criminal record in the United States and no ties to Sweden’s security establishment. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/26/world/europe/sweden-fraud-fox-news-commentator-trump.html
27) CNN Selectively Edits Police Shooting Victim’s Sister’s Words to Protesters https://archive.is/AuzyQ
28) After the shooting of a congressman at the Congressional Baseball game:
"Members of the Democratic team gather on the field for a prayer before the Congressional Baseball Game" http://archive.is/NOrep
Correction: Members of both teams gather on the field for a prayer before the Congressional Baseball Game (corrects who prayed) https://twitter.com/CNNPolitics/status/875694395122741248
29) The Hill writes article and Tweets claim that "Report: Trump admin denied Puerto Rico request to let victims use food stamps for fast food." https://web.archive.org/web/20171003215924/http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/353685-trump-admin-denied-puerto-rico-request-to-let-hurricane-victims-use

30) 2-second video causes headache for ABC News. ABC News faked part of a video of a Toyota with acceleration problems. They show a reporter in the moving vehicle, then cut to a shot of the tachometer revving to 6,000 RPMs while in park. They later apologized for faking the video. https://web.archive.org/web/20100314031252/http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100311/ap_en_tv/us_toyota_recall_abc You can still view the original video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRN1CnKrc84 The fake shot is at 2:15.
31) ABC: Brian Ross of ABC News reported that James Holmes, the suspect of the theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., may have connections to the tea party — basing that on a single web page that listed an Aurora-based “Jim Holmes” as a member of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots. The claim was later retracted and Ross appologized. https://www.politico.com/story/2012/07/ross-takes-heat-for-another-blunder-078793

33) NPR claims Wikileaks posted Macron leaks and also claims some of the documents were fake so they could tarnish Wikileaks' reputation, had to issue a correction stating that they don't know who leaked them. See the tweet and comments here: https://twitter.com/NPstatus/860936844942430210
34) "Correction: In this report, it's said that North Korea has continued to develop and test nuclear weapons despite warnings from the Trump administration. While North Korea is believed to still be developing nuclear weapons, it has not tested any since President Trump took office." http://www.npr.org/2017/06/19/533494139/how-to-deal-with-north-korea-some-options-are-worse-than-others
35) Fox News headline: "Doctors claim baby's 2015 death was caused by marijuana overdose." This is false. The doctors do not claim marijuana was the cause of death. They claim that the death was associated with marijuana in the system and that other possible causes of the death couldn't be tested for. https://np.reddit.com/media_criticism/comments/7dpep7/fox_news_headline_doctors_claim_babys_2015_death/
36) CNN claimed the Trump campaign was given special access to Wikileaks documents before they were published based on an email they said was dated September 4, prior to the release of those documents. This was according to “multiple sources." They updated the story to show that the email was actually dated September 14, after the documents were made public, which means some random person messaged the Trump Campaign about public information, which is a non-story https://theintercept.com/2017/12/09/the-u-s-media-yesterday-suffered-its-most-humiliating-debacle-in-ages-now-refuses-all-transparency-over-what-happened/. 36.2) NBC also "confirmed" the false September 4 email story with "two sources with direct knowledge." https://web.archive.org/web20171208164020/http://www.nbcnews.com/https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/trumps-trump-jr-received-email-offering-hacked-wikileaks-documents-last-n827716

38) In 1992, NBC fabricated a news story entitled "Waiting to Explode," claiming that a line of trucks produced by General Motors can explode on impact. They ensured that a fire would occur by using a planted incendiary device to cause the fire, used the wrong gas cap, and overfilled the tank. [4:33] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvBQDHqdCck
39) "If any company can relate to Toyota's current recall woes, it's Audi. The German automaker was hit with similar allegations of unintended acceleration during the 1980s, when supposed faulty gas pedals on its popular 5000 series sedan were linked to six deaths and 700 crashes. Though the problem was eventually determined to be a case of driver error—people were hitting the gas instead of the brake—Audi had to issue a major recall. A 1986 60 Minutes investigation plunged the knife in. The investigation was later debunked when it was discovered that an expert had rigged a car to accelerate irregularly. But the damage was done. Audi sales dropped 80 percent over the next five years. It wasn't until 2000 that it regained its peak from 1985." http://www.newsweek.com/what-toyota-can-learn-audis-80s-recall-75191
40) "A little girl who became the public face of US migrant family separations was not taken away from her mother at the US border, says her father. A photograph of the Honduran toddler sobbing in a pink jacket was snapped at the scene of a border detention. Time magazine has used the image for its latest cover, depicting President Donald Trump looming over the girl with the caption: "Welcome to America". Time magazine also corrected its story, which said the girl was "carried away screaming by US Border Patrol agents", to instead say the mother and daughter were "taken away together". https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-44578339
41) "How NBC Knowingly Let Syria Rebels’ False War Propaganda Stand For Years. Not correcting the story of Richard Engel’s kidnapping is worse than the Brian Williams scandal." https://www.thenation.com/article/how-nbc-knowingly-let-syria-rebels-false-war-propaganda-stand-years/
42) CNN's Hadas Gold tweets out viral photos of caged migrant children at an ICE detention facility, giving the impression they were recent photos. The photos were also tweeted out by the editor-in-chief of NYT Magazine, Shaun King of The Intercept, Lauren Wolfe of NYT and Guardian, and senior investigative reporter at ProPublica T. Christian Miller without specifying that they were from 2014. https://np.reddit.com/media_criticism/comments/8mqylx/those_viral_photos_of_caged_migrant_children_at/
43) How statistics and graphs can be manipulated on Fox News, even to the point that they don't make any sense. https://www.businessinsider.com/fox-news-charts-tricks-data-2012-11
44) A Clinton Fan Manufactured Fake News That MSNBC Personalities Spread to Discredit WikiLeaks Docs
From MSNBC, The Atlantic, and Newsweek: "That the emails in the Wikileaks archive were doctored or faked — and thus should be disregarded — was classic Fake News, spread not by Macedonian teenagers or Kremlin operatives but by established news outlets such as MSNBC, The Atlantic, and Newsweek. And, by design, this Fake News spread like wildfire all over the internet, hungrily clicked and shared by tens of thousands of people eager to believe it was true. As a result of this deliberate disinformation campaign, anyone reporting on the contents of the emails was instantly met with claims that the documents in the archive had been proven fake. The most damaging such claim came from MSNBC’s intelligence analyst Malcolm Nance. As I documented on October 11, he tweeted what he — for some bizarre reason — labeled an “Official Warning.” It decreed: “#PodestaEmails are already proving to be riddled with obvious forgeries & #blackpropaganda not even professionally done.” That tweet was re-tweeted by more than 4,000 people. It was vested with added credibility by Clinton-supporting journalists like Reid and Frum (“expert to take seriously”). All of that, in turn, led to an article in something called the “Daily News Bin” with the headline: “MSNBC intelligence expert: WikiLeaks is releasing falsified emails not really from Hillary Clinton.” This classic fake news product — citing Nance and Reid among others — was shared more than 40,000 times on Facebook alone." https://theintercept.com/2016/12/09/a-clinton-fan-manufactured-fake-news-that-msnbc-personalities-spread-to-discredit-wikileaks-docs/
45) Intercept journalist from 2014-2016, Juan Thompson, was caught by The Intercept for fabricating sources and quotes for his anti Trump articles. https://theintercept.com/2016/02/02/a-note-to-readers/ Incidentally, a year after he was fired, Juan Thompson was caught calling in fake bomb threats to Jewish community centers. https://theintercept.com/2017/03/03/statement-on-the-arrest-of-former-intercept-reporter-juan-thompson/
46) Brian Williams of NBC News lied about being shot down in a helicopter in Iraq. NBC news executives quietly told Williams to stop repeating the bogus story. It was only after flight engineer Lance Reynolds, who was actually in the helicopter that got shot down in Iraq, made a public Facebook post exposing Williams that NBC had to issue an apology. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCl4Y5-mfL0
47) Der Spiegel exposes their own, says top journalist faked stories for years. He “made up stories and invented protagonists” in at least 14 out of 60 articles that appeared in its print and online editions, warning that other outlets could also be affected. Claas Relotius, 33, resigned after admitting to the scam. He had written for the magazine for seven years and won numerous awards for his investigative journalism, including CNN Journalist of the Year in 2014. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/dec/19/top-der-spiegel-journalist-resigns-over-fake-interviews
48) Fox News accused the wrong guy of being a pedophile. They realized two different men had a similar name, so they corrected the article, but they never mentioned that they corrected it.

2019.01.25 04:39 EccoMassimo SanDisk 64gb USB 3.0 Data Loss Issue.

I have posted this on multiple subs so please don't get mad if you have already seen this before. My SanDisk 64gb Extreme usb3.0 drive has recently gone dead. The drive interface is able to be detected by windows, however no file system is showing. The SanDisk name and type show up under device management, however no partitions are found. I suspect that the control chip has gone bad, however the usb interface is still good (since it still shows up as a device but not a drive). We also hada recent power outage in the house and my drive was plugged in during that. If anybody would know a fix to this or could recommend me a good data recovery service, that would be great. I
